Non mechanic starter question

My JD 575 skidsteers starter will not stay engaged permitting a extended crank time. It seems like it disengaged and free wheels. If I stop and hit it again it might catch long enough to crank and start.....maybe not. Eventually it will fire and run.
This has the three cylinder Yanmar diesel and the battery is fairly new. It seems like when it's warm it engages much better.
Any suggestions ?

If you are willing to pull it off sometimes just a good greasing there on the screw part f the shaft will solve the problem, but for sure it is the starter drive. Hard on the flywheel to continue using it as is.

All on the track. NOW this is what the guy who is in his late 60s and has rebuilt generators , starters, and altinaters for years in his repair shop. After you put a new bendix on do not lube it! You want to make things so the flywheel will kick the bendix back after the engine gets up enough speed. That is why some starters have that thin little weak spring on the shaft. The only thing he said will work is powdered graphite. Dump some in the thread of the shaft and gear and work it in by hand to get as much as you can. This will be super slick. Nothing wet that will collect crap. So far my 300U is a thing of beauty when I turn the key.

like said below, weak starter drive. my 826 hydro did the same thing- almost impossible to get it started when it was cold and needed extra cranking. i take starters and alternators to Gillette Electrical on colesville rd (near Don's Auto Mall) and they do a good job for me.
