I assume you are asking about how to attach boards with no one holding the other end. It is important that that your posts are very close to plumb so that one sized board fits all. I just put one screw near the center of one end into one post to just hold that end up, then went to the other end and put in the desired 2-3. Then back to the first end to put the remaining 1-2 in.

Dog chain loop attached over a nail (not nailed on) on the top of a post can allow you to hold one end up while lifting the other. Adjusting the loop size as you move up. Jim

And to expand on that, do all the bottom boards first. Then make 2 spacers, put one on each end of the bottom board for the next one up, and so on.

I just lightly drive a nail into a post where the "bottom" of the board goes. Then set the board on the nail while I hold and nail the other end of the board in place with one nail. Now go back and nail the end setting on the ledge nail in place. pull the ledge nail. Lift the middle in line and nail it. Finish nailing both ends and the middle. I assume you are nailing 16 ft boards, onto 8 ft spaced posts. Slow, and lots of walking back and forth but it works.

Next time, find a helper. You'll get 10 times more done on this task with 2 people.
