OT Buckshot

Reading the warning on a box of .22 long rifle that the range is one mile, I was wondering approximately how far will 12 guage 00 Buckshot pellets travel. Three inch magnum with a 24" barrel fired level.

I used oo for coyotes back in the day.12 gauge 3 ".You could rock their world at 35-40 yards with no problem. We hunted in areas where rifles weren't an option. Ran 'em with dogs and pickups.

I would say a 24' barrel with full choke the pattern at 75 yards you'll hit the entire broad side of the barn.LOL.

Thanks Charlie, I realize the effective range for hitting a target, but was wondering how far beyond a pellet may travel. I have neighbors a half mile to my west and would never fire a rifle that direction, but was wondering if I could use the 12 gauge. We have coyotes around here.

It's not intirly about range when it come's to safty but buckshot will have hit the ground and stopped rolling in less than 400 yards (half the distance to neighbor's house). Then of course there's folks like the guy who called the sheriff on me because he could hear projectils hitting his buildings. Deputy had a laugh when he saw the starter pistol I was useing to train dogs.

I have shot and killed a deer at 275yds with buckshot. I am not an expert but use a 32" barrel and have a good pattern , size of a 5 gallon bucket, at 100yds .

sorry Kub but I call bullship on that. Maybe you have a fisherman's tape measure. I have been researching since I asked my question and the accepted max is 50 yards for deer.

At 275 yards you would be lucky with the spread of pellets of 00 buck that if one pellet of 00 buck would hit a deer and 12 gauge 00 buck is actually only 33 cal. and would not be a clean kill and not legal for deer in most states.

From what I can find doing a little research.

Combat loads which are considered the most potent buckshot loads have an effective range of 55 yds, a dangerous range of about 300 yds and can travel about 500 yards if fired at a 30 degree elevation.

I would buy 27.5 yards but no way 275 yds. You need a better range finder or tape measurer.

#4 shot should take care of them out to about 60 yards.
