Oxygen Sensor on Dodge Diesel

On our 2012 Dodge 2500 Diesel, we have changed the sensor 3 or 4 times. The. Dealer has told me twice that it was over filled with oil during an oil change. This time I checked the dip stick and it was right on the full mark the next day, so it was not over filled. The dealer drained two quarts out and now the stick shows the oil level to be right on the add oil mark. They want me to run it with the oil at that level so it doesn't make the oxygen sensor come on.

I don't think Dodge or Cummins has a clue about fixing the problem. The sensors are always on back order, so I don't think I'm the only one with the problem.

Any body else having this problem? Thanks for any advice.

In general a turbo diesel should not be filled to the very top of the full line , somewhere in the normal range is OK , usually anywhere above the add mark is good. The more oil you put in it the more it expands when heated up and the more oil that ends up in the induction system and then on your O2 sensor. When you put 30lbs plus of boost in an engine you create crankcase pressure and the more oil in there the more it gets aireated by rotating parts and turned into a vapor headed for your intake. Its not a new problem or limited to Dodge or even diesels. Listen to them. They may revise the dipstick or listed capacity in the future. Overfilled diesels have been filling CAC tubes for a long time .

Thanks robg. I don't know why they are so reluctant to tell me what is going on. All they will say is "it was overfilled with oil". Why didn't they say at the get go to just have two less quarts put in? I suspect they have a reason that I don't know about. - Maybe turning it in on warranty and trying to charge me also?

Thanks again for the advise !!

"I don't know why they are so reluctant to tell me what is going on."

I'm surprised they volunteered that much information! Looking at the situation from the legalistic standpoint, they are really putting themselves and their job on the line any time they give any advise that doesn't officially come in writing from the factory. It could open themselves up to a lawsuit if something were to go wrong, especially if EPA, DOT regulations or personal injury were involved.

This is a known problem on these trucks and I would assume the dealer has knowledge of this problem. There is a service bulletin for pretty much any oxygen sensor code possible, the bulletin involves installing an overlay harness for the oxygen sensors. This has been an ongoing problem for a couple years and the service bulletins have been superseded a couple times. The current TSB number is 25-003-13.
