hydraulic coupler question

I have a Farmall 504 with a loader. When the loader is attached I am getting a lot of leakage from one set of side ports. I am assuming the female couplings on the tractor are IH and the male couplers have IH stamped on them. I want to replace the male couplings first as they are cheaper. And I replaced the O-rings in the females also. Would Pioneer male couplings work in IH female couplings? Thanks for the input.

Unless there's some obvious damage to the couplers or the make tips I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you either got the wrong O-rings, killed them during the installation process or are missing backup rings (if used in this application).

If you mean they are leaking oil to the outside when they are coupled you'd most likely be wasting money to change the male half. I say this because the seal on the couplings your talking about are in the female half. As such, unless the male half has wear grooves, changing them isn't going to do a thing.

Now if you were talking flat faced couplers it would be a different story, but the style your describing all (to my knowledge) seal with the female half.

All the IH couplers I've ever seen on tractors from that era will take pioneer tips.

Try getting a better idea of where the oil is coming from before you start throwing parts at it, though.

Rufus, you are thing of the 'new style' IH tip of the 66/86 series. The 'Old style' is totally interchangeable with Pioneer. I have both on the farm. They mix/ match frequently.

If you have already replaced the Oring, then the female body is worn. Replaceing the male tip wont help.I just went through this
this spring. After replaceing male tip, still leaked.Replaced the female body. The drips stopped.

Boy, I have to disagree with most on this one. The male coupler is the one that gets banged around and all beat up . If a new o-ring was installed in female correctly, the male is most likely the culprit. I would put point to point couplers though and ball to ball.

The male tip has just a ball that seals it when disconnected, all the moving parts that make it couple are in the female

We are talking about leaking when coupled up. The points and balls I referred to are the two different styles of couplers IH and pioneer both used. Some have a pointed end for less restriction to flow and some use balls. Best to match couplers using same style ends, either ball, or points.

Right, but the collar and balls that lock and align it when coupled together are in the female

right now when they are coupled I can wiggle them and they will leak. The male couplers have the tip. I will look to see if the female are the ball style. Will the new pioneer ball style fit the IH ball style?

Hi I think you should tell the couple guys I rebuilt JD female couplers for that. They put new males on the implements I put new genuine JD rings in the females once for them, as they were cheaper than the rest of the parts Deere advised were worn out in the first place.
They still had leaks After that, Finally they decided to get new barrel kits and After I did the job right like Deere said the leaks stopped.

I have had the same with a customer with IH 66 series females to that the older IH counter guy told us would not seal with new rings. in the end the customer decided to buy the pioneer style update females, I fitted them and the problems went away. He didn't have to use the converter adapters for his other machines either on that tractor after.
I do agree about matching end types if you can, I have seen problems with flow caused by miss matches the odd time.
