hay baling rate

I have a question for you farmers. What is the fair or going rate to bale someone field (I would cut, rake and bale). His field is already been plant before and I would like to know what shares should I get. Thanks in advance for your responses

It has been a while since I did baling like that but back when I did I got 2/3 or the hay and the owner got the 1/3. That was with me cutting raking and baling the hay

dayong,

It's also important to agree in advance as to who is going to pick up the bales and store them in a barn. If you are going to haul his hay, you ought to get another $.75 or $1.00 per bale. I sell my grass hay for $3.00 per bale on the ground, $3.50 per bale out of my barn, and $4.00 per bale delivered and stacked in the buyer's barn.

I do everything by myself, so the extra work should be worth something.

And me.

Hay was selling for $1.50 a bale back then, so if they just wanted me to put up their hay, it was a dollar a bale for cutting, raking and baling. Bales deposited on the ground, for their hay bucking pleasure.

If it's just run of the mill, ordinary mixed grass then 2/3 may be OK. I've seen fields that i wouldn't cut and bale if they gave it all to me. I've also had some fields that I cut and baled for 1/3 and came out very well. There are lots of variables. I haven't custom cut hay in a few years, today I think I would charge by the acre to cut and baling would be another charge.

I have my fields baled on shares for past 4 years or so, and the guy that does mine does on halves. He takes half, and pays me for half. I hear this is unusual, but he offered the deal, and I figure with fuel prices about half what they were, and my land is worth something, and he appears to need the hay, and so far no complaints, we are both happy. There would come a point where I would bush hog it if I could not get a decent price for it.

The custom hay we do we charge $2.00 to cut rake and bale per bale with a minimum charge depending on distance and field size. Shares we do a 2/3 1/3 land owner getting 1/3. That is just how we do it here in Southeast SD.
