ford 2000 quick?

im just in for another part, im working on a late 60's ford 2000 3 cylinder gas, it ran ok, then slowly shut down, owner dragged it into the barn, now we have cleaned out the fuel system from carb to the tank, have plenty of gas thru the carb, new points plugs, condenser ect everything appears to be working, we have spark, but this thing takes a lot of choke and a lot of cranking to start, if it actually does start, it idles fine, but when the throttle is pulled, it farts and craps out and wont run up in rpm, im about out of ideas, and i was brung in the middle of this project it seems to have decent vacuum, so that rules out mechanical damage at least enough that it should run right? any ideas?

ok it might be i set it according to what i found online, with the carb upright and level, [ i used one] set the float to be level when pushed up with the fingers until it stops as the needle gets pushed it

First off is your spark a good blue/white at all plug wires and jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more??
Does choking it hurt or help?? How about running it with the gas cap off does that do any thing??
Can you pull the carb drain plug if a gravity flow system and have a good gas flow that will fill a pint jar in under 3 minutes?

Have you checked the spark quality at the plugs? Could be just enough to idle but not power up. Double check all of the ignition components, todays new parts are not always a correct match or of best quality.
Also check the distributor bushing, centrifugal advance, and timing.

Any possibility there could be missing, damaged, improperly installed parts in the carb, like the main discharge jet, or the venturi? Could the tip of the main mix needle be broken off in the main jet?

Can you nurse it up to speed with partial choke? Will a shot of gas from a squirt can bring it up to speed? If either apply, it is fuel related.

Maybe the switch is bad, had that problem on a different tractor, new switch cured it. I don't remember the steps to check for a bad switch, maybe someone on here can advise.

Check a bad switch is as simple as hot wiring it which is running a wire form the ignition side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil and if it runs like it should then you know the problem is from the coil back so a bad wire or bad switch is likely to be the problem

Did you check it for vacuum leak? Another symptom of needing a lot of choke. Check it with a little propane around the manifold area.

Until you stated it farts and craps out I was thinking low compression are tight valves... I would still confirm compression and check the valves before you work on fix'N it till you break it...

Is it a Holley carb? If so, scan the archives here, especially on the Ford forum. You have classic Holley-Ford symptoms. Up-front: the issue of Holley's on these Fords is a polarizing one. You either hate 'em & replace with a pricey Zenith & send the Holley on a long walk off a short pier...or you love 'em. One of the other posters who has replied already is in the latter camp, I'm 5+ years in the Zenith camp.

this thing drove us nuts! found out we had 2 main problems, first was a intermittent coil it would fire at idle but upon revving the engine it would cut out, i finally came back to the farm and took the coil off my ford, which i had drove that day and knew it was good, the 2000 fired right up and tried to rev, but not real well, turned out the holley! had an air leak around the big cap that is held on the bottom of the air horn by a piece of metal and 1 screw, made a gasket and then the thing ran fine , i left while it did lol

I spent about a jillion hours as a big kid raking hay ahead of two hungry IH 886's pullin two JD 430 round balers, them fellas were on my behind every summer. That ford 2000 gas was rough and hard to stay in the saddle, but we sure did put up some hay!
