Thought for the day:

" A wise man can see more from a the bottom of a well than a fool can see from a mountaintop. "

As a 16 year old, I was let down into the bottom of a 56 foot well to check on the condition of the rocks that lined that part in the bottom. Looked into a small cavern that had washed out and saw the two eyes of a snake looking out at me. I did not feel very wise at the time.
Looking up, the opening of the well looked about the size of a dime.

As dumb kids we used to climb down in a couple of the old hand dug stone lined wells just for fun. As an adult reading local history, their are stories of people suffocating digging those wells due to gases/lack of oxygen.

yes, men in the Appalachians lowered a burning candle down the well. If it went out, air had to be pumped down in it. Dug wells were about 20 ft. deep.
