Last restoration project for the year

Just finished up a model 350 John Deere rake that needed some attention. I have a little detail work yet but for the most part it is finished. I think that this is the first implement that I have ever been around that was designed to be used as a trailer model, semi mounted or full three point. Just need to remove the tongue at the pins and adjusting crank and put on the shorter PTO shaft for the three point.

It is so nice to see some people who restore a few pieces of equipment and not always tractors! Very Very nice job. Man is that thing ever greeennn.

Beautiful job! The mounting tabs on the teeth are green - that took some time. That jumped out at me - I have new teeth on my rake, and the tabs are unpainted.

PJH,

I am surprised that anybody would notice that. I bought all new teeth for it but they came unpainted and would rust as soon as it ever got wet so I filled a coffee can with just enough green paint to paint them up to the rubber molding and dipped them in the can and let them dry before I put them on the rake. After they were installed I filled a tall coke bottle with black paint and dipped the tine itself in the pop bottle to paint that part. I thought it worked quite well and made a finished job out of it. Thanks for noticing. Tom

Our tractor club has a Massey Harris hay rake from that era that is pretty much the same design. Not sure of the model number but very similar. We'd swap ours (including an extra parts rake) for yours any day of the week .... ha!!!

I changed all the teeth in my Dad's NH 256 this summer, it took a good part of the day so I know how much work you put in plus you repainted all of them. Nice touch!

Tom - thanks for explaining how you painted them - I ran all kinds of ideas about how you might have done it. You're a detailer deluxe! After painting the tooth, then you have to figure out how to dry the paint without messing it up.

I like the grease fittings on the ends of the reel bars - mine doesn't have that.

I've got one just like that, of course not that pretty. I added two more wheels between the two wheels that are there. That prevents the teeth from digging in the ground if you hit a low spot in the field. I never liked that rake because it would roll the hay into a windrow then the windrows would pop open again, making it hard for the baler to pick up the hay. Used it for years until I found a good tedder/rake. You did a nice job on your rake..
