Has anyone ever seen a coach bus do the speed limit? Has anyone ever heard of one being pulled and cited for speeding? I always see them driving at some ridiculous speed.

Here in SC they regularly get pulled over on I-85 in the south bound lane around Gaffney. Not for speeding though. All the luggage is being search by K-9 units. Seems the drugs go up I-95 to NY and the proceeds go south on I-85. They let the north bound buses go, and pull over the south bounds ones to get the money.

They do go fast. A friend used to drive one and I asked him about it. He said that they don't get any special treatment but that the company expects them to go as fast as they can when the going is good so as to give themselves a buffer in case they run into traffic. They just know for a given area what is the max that they can get away with.

Yeah, I've ticketed them.

The Mennonite that drove my school bus during my senior year of high school never drove faster than 25MPH. We were late almost every day, and had to sign in at the main office. Nobody ever said a word to him, but we were constantly in trouble for being tardy.

Back before so many regulations I was on a charter ride from Fort Leonard Wood to Fort Hood. Two big old busses with a dog on the side running full throttle. The drivers would change while moving at top speed. When we arrived at the first fuel stop just north of Dallas the lead bus needed a couple gallons of oil and the entire rear of the bus was covered with oil. No visible speedometer. Detroit was doing what it does best!

Isn't that the truth. Most of the school bus drivers in my area drive them like they stole them. I know I was driving home one day, and happened to look up in my rear view mirror and all I could see was a grille of the school bus behind me, less than a car length behind me, probably within 20 feet. Law enforcement in this area will not touch them, yet one would think they would be the first to get pulled over. If situation were reversed and I was following a school bus that close the driver(s) would likely be the first to complain.

When I went for my CDL-A 12 years ago the DOT examiner could not get his head into what I was doing during my driving test because the topic of bus drivers came up, and he went on a twenty minute rant about what terrible drivers many of them are, and how many times most of them have to come back for their test.

(quoted from post at 09:03:00 12/16/16) I have never seen that. i work in charlotte and drive on 85 actually every day

We roll through there about 4:45- 5pm everyday If you don't notice all the out of state cop cars setting alongside I-85 when the interdictions are going on you must not be running 85 during daylight hours. It often coincides with Rolling Thunder.
