bale spears?

I would like to buy a spear and make a mounting for my loader. Is there a big difference in spear quality between the brands?

I have made a lot of them as a production item out of 2 inch hot rolled round bar with a fin of 1/4 x 2 1/2 on top and bottom for the rear half of length. None were ever reported bent.

Not much difference but a few different types. I have sold many that just clamped onto the loader bucket with a chain and turnbuckle and they worked good for those who already had a loader with a bucket. I used one of that type for myself and I like them because it was easy to remove. The other type that I have been selling are the ones that attach like a skid steer bucket. Again, very handy if you have the right loader. Another type is the one that fits your 3 point hitch. They work OK for moving bales but do not work for loading or unloading from wagon or trailer because your lift height is limited. Another type that I have used and sold are the ones that pin onto your loader in place of the bucket. They work good but unhandy to remove when you want to use your loader bucket.

Look for one with a replaceable spear because sooner or later you may bend it. If it is replaceable you can straighten it but you must remove it from the frame first.

I turn mine upside down when it gets a little warped. One of the square ones on a skid steer but it goes in tight bales easily.

DITTO when I bend my spears I just rotate them 180°

I've bent my bale spears on my PU flat bed several times utilizing spears to do things they weren't designed for such as picking up implements to air up or change flats & pulling tee posts or carrying livestock panels.

Made one from a large truck axle...........tough? Well, I was backing up without due attention and punched it completely through a 10 inch diameter oak tree trunk!

I bought one for the three point hitch 37 years ago that I haven't been able to hurt at all yet. I think the place where I bought it was an Itco store back then. It's a T shaped frame, upside down, with a two inch shaft and two shorter spears at the bottom.
I made another one myself using an axle out of an old fire truck. I broke that axle twice, replaced it with the one out of the other side and broke that one twice. I've tried round stock from other things, but there wasn't enough carbon in them or something. They all just bent. I bought a Tarter one time but never used it. The spear looked to be about an inch and a half and it had been bent in a few places already when I got it.

I have one made by MDS with 2 spears. I have used those with the single spear accompanied by 2 smaller ones to help stabilize the bale. I prefer the one I have with the 2 spears.................but that is my opinion.

I learned to hate the type of bale spear that you remove the bucket and then install the spear because it is a pain to put the pins in when you switch form one to the other. I use a bolt in spear so it sits in the bucket it self. But you also have to make sure your bucket is in good shape to use one or you will end up like me and have to rebuild the bucket at some point

Having spear attached to bucket lowers loaders lifting capability because it puts bale so much further in frt of bucket attaching pins.

I like my loaders quick attach which is same as skid steer quick attachment bracket.

I've used that type twice. Once on a 4020 when I bought some hay and once to unload when I sold some. That one was on a utility type International. I didn't care for that set up at all. I backed on to just the least little side incline with the International and one rear tire started coming off the ground. Scared the daylights out of me.

Kverneland taped tine. Never bent or broke one, easy to replace if you did.

Many OEM use these tines, you can buy the "slug" that they mount into and then weld up your own spear or weld to bucket.

Use a chain on/turnbuckle one, they will bend your bucket over time.

Also use a Global QA one, that is the only way to go.

What ever you get please DO NOT drive on public road with spear at windshield height. Never understood how anyone could be so calloused as to drive with spear where it would cause death so easily!!
