I am new member to the YT forum however I have been a viewer of the forum for the past eight months. I consumed much of the knowledge posted here which helped in my latest tractor purchase and some of its repairs and modifications. I figured I should join so that perhaps I could also help others out a bit myself and also ask a question once in a while.

I am a Merchant Marine engineering officer and so I spend six months of each year on a ship. This work schedule limits me to a bit of small hobby gardening because missing the planting and harvesting seasons frequently and as not to overwhelm the wife and kids while I am gone.

I have a 1975 Ford 4000 SU and 1989 JD 322

Thank you for letting me come aboard.

Hello and welcome!,

You'll wander how you ever did with out this board. I am usually on tool talk, turned wrenches among other jobs. May be i'll see your posts there. Lots of knowledge here!

Guido.

Welcome aboard!! What school did you go to? My brother and 4 of our friends went to NY Maritime College and to KIngs Point(deckies)

I meant to include these on the original post

Greetings.

I'm not a Ford fan, but tell us about that interesting building in the background.

How much are you gone at any one time? Days, weeks, etc?

Here is a link and winter in the Atlantic

For the past eight years I have been doing a 21 day rotation. 21 days at sea then 21 at home. It really plays out to be 22 away and 20 at home.

That is the "barn" built with my dad and seven siblings in 1986. It's really just a big garage one door on the lower level two bays and work area in the middle and a full loft used as storage. Was original used for my dads company but now just used as a garage. Sometimes I store a few my machines at the homestead.

My dad and a nephew rebuilt the retaining wall this past summer. Dad does a great job at teaching useful skills.

What is this a picture of? A small loaded tanker, a tug pushing a barge? It looks a little rough for a tub to be in contact with a barge. And welcome to YT. You have a couple of nice looking tractors and a nice looking place. Are you home there the 6 mos you aren't at sea?

Yeah, ship and ocean pictures! Any big diesels? I ran GM diesels on a small tanker for the navy when I was in back about 1970.

I'm actually from South West PA.

Just happened to go to Maritime academy in Maine.
Thanks for the warm welcome.

Yes the 322 has the gas yanmar engine. Kinda wish I had the little older 322 with the diesel engine, however she is a great little tractor.

We don't really have very big engines because the boat is only 255 ft long. I have worked on 1000 ft ships with 64,000+ hp but here are some of the enginees on the Westwind.

2 CAT 3516C Maine engines are about 3000hp each
3 CAT C32 thruster engines are 900hp each
3 CAT C18 generator engines are 300 hp each

I found some better pictures today.

The vessel is bassicly like an offshore supply vessel that has some containers on the back.

so how far up the engineering ladder have you climbed? 3rd,2nd,or 1st engineer? did you receive a commission in the US Navy?

dpendzic
I am a 2nd engineer unlimited but have a chiefs for the small boats I am on. I am running chief now. No Navy commission but I have worked on MSC all my career.

Nice pictures, an interesting ship you are on. Does it service oil rigs, or a small coastal cargo? Where do you get to go?

I earned my OOD Underway on an aircraft carrier USS Constellation. Longest period at sea was flight ops in Tonkin Gulf for 52 days. We ran out of everything except 500lb bombs, Sidewinders, and JP-5.
Best Ship's Captin I ever saw handling a shipwas a former Merchant Marine service Captain. He was the only one that knew hot to barter and buy from the merchants we crossed tracks with. We were only on lanes during Transpacs from CA to HI or Guam or Phillipines Or from Hong Kong to anywhere.
