Thought for the day:

" Nothing beats reading a good book when there is work to do. "

Bernard Matthews started out in Great Witchingham Hall breeding turkeys on the ground floor and living upstairs. Witchingham Hall is a huge Palladium building that was going cheap in the early 1950's.

They built turkey sheds for rearing turkeys on a number of old World War II air bases, setting the sheds up on the runways and taxiways then hiring the land out to local farmers. Bernard Matthews would then buy corn from the farmers for feedstuff.

Bird Flu hit the company and so did a television program that showed one of the best selling lines, Turkey Twizzlers was unhealthy for children. Company now is a lot smaller than it was.

I "restored" a rifle for a fellow whose grandfather took it with him to the California gold rush before 1850.
It was hand made with octagon barrel. He fires it occasionally with just packing over the powder. Really makes a boom.
Yes, the grandson of the gold rush man is still alive.

There was a show on PBS a few years ago, a couple of old school craftsmen built a hex barrel rifle from scratch, the way it was done back when.

What a process! Took them a year to build it. They made everything from the barrel to the screws, all by hand, no power tools!

Imagine what a rifle would have cost back then!

Our son and his wife own and live in a house that was owned by a gunsmith who made guns for the Confederacy.
His name was William Bearden. His wife sometimes helped him bore the barrels for the guns. Our son has found gun parts in the yard using a metal detector. The house was built sometime before the Civil War and has 6 fireplaces in it.

Fascinating to read about the gold rush and early mining days in America.

I live over the mountain from Harper's Ferry WV. There was an U.S. armory there for many years since late 1700's that made muskets and during the civil war it was burned by the Union Army. Always wanted a real Harper's Ferry musket to own but just too much $$$.

Union army camped along our creek and meadow before the battle of Antietam. Have found minie balls, coat buttons etc.

Brigham Young wrote to James W Marshal and told him the gold belongs to the Mormon church bring it to Salt Lake City. Marshal said I'll bring you the gold when I get a letter from God himself.
