cockshutt 20 headache...

I have a cockshutt 20 that when I got it, it had a 12 volt battery in. They hooked the battery up wrong,+ to ground, which cooked the coil. I was told that it was converted to 12 volt. Long story short it was a 6 volt generator which is now junk. I took it to have it and the regulator repaired and was told you can't get parts for auto lite generators anymore. Is this true? The lights all work, and it didn't run bad until you give it full gas then it will miss bad. I rebuilt the dist. new plugs, wires, rotor and, cap, pertronics and coil. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Thanks in advance Al

Take it to a good starter repair shop. Get their opinion.
We have 2 shops here that would rebuild your generator.

You have been given some miss information!. They were positive ground when new. I take it that now it is set up for electronic ignition. What type of plug wires are you using? On second though you have e-mail or a phone number or e-mail me. J.

Tractor was originally 6 volt positive ground. If you put pertronics in it did you put 6 volt or 12 volt electronic ignition and what voltage coil did you use. Auto Lite generators were used on Willys Jeeps and a lot of other applications. Parts are still available through a reputable rebuilder so check around on the internet if you want to stay 6 volt. If not I put a Delco 12 volt generator and regulator on my cockshutt 35 so it would look more original than an alternator.

I recently had an Autolite generator from a Cockshutt 30 sent off to be repaired. I was not able to have it rebuilt locally because it had fried the armature windings. The initial estimate was for 30 days, but in the end it took about 90 days to have it repaired. It wasn't cheap, but this tractor was to be restored to as close to factory as possible. One rebuilder that I bet can still help you out is "Wilson". Do a Google search for "Wilson starters". Have a little patience on their web site and you'll probably find the exact Wilson generator number that you need. A lot of NAPA stores sell Wilson products, although they may have to be special ordered. Usually, the NAPA owner can get your generator sent in if he really wants to help you out.
Of course, I'm sure a few other posters will give you places to help you out also.
Good luck.

I put 12 volt pertronics and 12volt coil. I agree that it was positive ground with a 6 volt system. But they put a 12 volt battery in using a positive ground.

I got a 12 volt delco generator but no regulator. My generator is delco 1102225 6G 6, what regulator did you use ? Thanks for your help Al

It has pertronics 12volt, 12volt coil, 40,000 volts, 8mm msd plug wires, autolite plugs.
Before I removed the generator it would start right up and run very good until it got past 3/4 speed, then it starts to miss until it gets a load on it then runs good. I'm sorry , This is when I am pulling it at tractor pulls. I've done a compression test and got 155 to 160 in all 4cylinders.

You most certainly can get Autolite parts. Go to a real generator shop, not some fly by night auto parts store.

Positive ground, in itself, did not cook the coil. Coil does not care if it is positive or negative ground but does give more efficient spark if it is configured according to ground system. Positive ground + on coil to distributor, negative ground - to distributor.

What is the polarity of the Pertrinix module, positive or negative ground? Battery polarity must match the Pertronix module. Reversing battery connections to the Pertronix will let the smoke out of the module which can in turn fry the coil if switch is left on with battery connected.

Pertronix also recommends suppression plug wires, not the solid metal core.
