Tire load range

Why do tire companies make things so difficult. I found tires with a load index of 104. How close it this number to load range E? Stan

A tire of 104 load index would would not come close to carrying the load that a load range E tire would.

The "letter" load range doesn't tell you much about the actual carrying capacity of the tire since a large C or D tire might carry the same load as a small E tire. The letter mostly tells you about the tire's pressure rating, not the load capacity. The load index number accounts for this by giving a single number that can be compared regardless of tire size. Google "load range index" and you'll find charts that relate the index to actual capacity.

I googled the tire range index and it brought up a chart, but it didn't cover heavier trailer tires. I just bought two ST235/80R16 for my wood hauler. Load range index on these is 125/121M. Tire dealer said they would carry 4400# @ 90-lbs. air. I didn't find any numbers this high in the chart to verify what I was told. I have no reason to doubt the dealer, but since the topic was up for discussion, I thought I would ask also.

Be very wary of trailer load range ratings by letter. Passenger vehicles, i.e. pickup truck tires, are rated at 80 miles per hour, trailer tires are sometimes rated at 60, or 62 or 65 miles per hour. Therefore trailer E rated tire is not the same as a pickup E rated tire of the same size. I have a number of trailers, and have no use for "trailer" tires.

I picked up a spreader frame with the business end knocked off. It has some 49x17's on it and I'm aiming to make a wood cart out of it.

Tires marked 104 are rated at 1984 pounds carrying weight.
According the Michelin chart.

I don't know all my trailer tires have a load rating by letter, and a weight by air pressure, with single or dual and the difference in weight as such.
they have a G rating with about 5-6000 per tire.
