I'm looking into buying a good pair of work boots for summer..are waterproof boots hotter I will do a lot of walking on dirt, gravel etc....next question are red wings worth the extra money?

I am super distructive when it comes to boot, red wings probably last me twice as long and any other boot I've tried.

From my experience, I found it best to invest in two pair of boots - one for dryer conditions and one waterproof pair. No matter what they say, waterproof boots will not vent your foot moisture as well as non-waterproof boots! That also means they hold in the heat better.

I went to a Red Wing outlet store here in its home state of Minnesota, and they said they didn't have anything to try on but narrow. It was SO narrow that I doubt my wife could have worn her size in the men's shoe. I've heard lots of good about Danner boots, but they're expensive.

One thing you might look into is, there are LOTS of military-type boots for sale out there. I got a pair made by Bates, but my continuing ankle problem prevents me from wearing them anymore. However, I didn't pay for the waterproof model.

Wow! Just looked back and they're now TWICE what I paid two years ago!! Great boots though! I've got a neighbor that's a Dep. Sheriff who also went over there to train others. He had a pair of the Danner boots. Don't know if his were waterproof, but he said they're awesome! He actually has two pair - one natural and one black.

I recommend you get Gore-Tex lined boots. Gore-Tex keeps your feet dry by both preventing water from coming in and allowing sweat to escape. I've had several pairs of Danner and Red-Wing boots with Gore-Tex lining. (There are other proprietary materials similar to Gore-Tex that may be just as good, but I have no experience with them.)

The top-of-the-line, made in the USA Red Wing boots are very good. My preferred style is 2414, which are Gore-Tex lined but not insulated. These boots cost over $200 a pair. You can buy the imported Red Wings for less, but they will not have the excellent "SuperSole".

My experience with brands other than Red Wing is limited for the simple reason that most companies don't make boots or shoes in narrow widths. I don't believe I'm the only person on the planet with narrow feet, which tells me there are a lot of people walking around in shoes that don't fit.

I think any boot made in China is junk. I bought an expensive pair of wolverines and they had the waterproof gortex but leaked. Tag in boot said china. Wolverine company replaced them but the new ones leaked worse than the old boots. Have to put the mink oil too them to be able to wear them in the wet.

Bought a pair of red wings and they have the China tag in them also. The fit and finish is not very good in them. They are waterproof, not gortex, but very hot and make my feet sweat a lot.

Find something thats comfortable and go with it. Waterproof? Get rubber boots. Personally I can't stomach paying over $100.00 (or $60 for that matter!) regardless of where they were made. I saw boots being made in shops in Korea and having the "MADE IN THE USA" tag sewn on right in front of me. And those were a brand name boot with hundreds being put in boxes for shipment. So I don't put much faith in truth in labeling anymore.

I've never had any leather boots that were actually waterproof, I've never had any boot of any kind that my feet didn't sweat in. YMMV, but these days cheap Walmart sneakers do about as good as any boot in places I don't need steel toes.

My work supplies me boots. We have to wear steel toes with metatarsal guards. I'm wearing an 8" Carolina logger boot now(taller heel and lug tread). Its also waterproof and insulated. I wear them year round. I guess my feet do sweat in them some, but I have 2 or 3 pairs I rotate through. They are the first boots I've owned claiming to be waterproof that actually are. They are also the first pair that my feet actually stay warm in.

They are made in China, but are a decent boot. I believe around $150.

Double H Boots, they're a cowboy boot, not a fancy type though. Handmade in the USA, Ohio maybe? My boots have seen it all and I'll say the only time my feet are wet is from sweat. They're pricey but if it's the last pair of work boots I ever buy that's money well spent. When I bought them at this decent western wear place by me I said to the gal when I walked in, "I need a boot that I can absolutely kick the s@&t out of" she walked straight over to them and said these are it, so far she's been right.

I have had RedWings for 30 years, about 2 years they last. Every pair has been good except the last pair doesn't seem near the quality. I am beginning to wonder if they are making them somewhere else, or with cheaper materials. Need to buy new again and not sure if I am going back.
