a light wagon or cart pulled by two horses/ mules. The doubletree was attached to the tongue by a pin thru the metal piece. What does the other end of the tongue look like?

Absolutely not a wagon as there are no tongue "hounds". Perhaps a cultivator or the transport trucks for a binder

(quoted from post at 08:46:58 07/14/17) My first thought is a bob sleigh.

I agree with Bob. There is a rod that goes through that trough in the cross piece and bolts the front of the runners together.

Sure looks like a wagon tongue....I would think that it would work on a bob-sled as well.

Looks like the tongue for a bob sled...that"s what we called them when growing up...used during the winter til early 50s. Apparently others know them as a bob sleigh.
