The sounds (and tweeks) of new equipment

Getting used to the sounds of a new to me (but well used) piece of equipment is interesting and always includes a period of tense excitement. Is that CLUNK normal? Or is it the sound of impending disaster? Is that tap-tap-tap going to turn into a CRASH? Or will it still be tap-tap-taping along 5 yrs from now? Is that occasional SCREECH the pickup clutch operating properly or a bearing freezing?

And then there are the adjustments?.what gear, and what RPM, or cutter blade angle adjustments, or when to tie off a bale before breaking something, or how tight to adjust the bale chute pressure screws or how big to make the windrow, or how wide to open the fertilizer door on the cone seeder? A new piece of old equipment is a listening, testing and trying experience.

It is really a skills test, and when it works out well, it is very satisfying.
Yesterday my new (50 year old) NH 270 backup baler made 155 nice brick bales without a breakdown or a miss tie. Very satisfying.

I know exactly what you mean. I have pondered this and I see the knowing what a new machine sounds like as one of the biggest reasons for buying new. Wondering about a noise can make running a machine much more tiring than when not.

My truck makes an odd noise the first thing in the morning. But after about a mile it goes away. Not afraid to drive it anywhere. But every morning
sounds like it is falling apart.

A lot of the older tractors had noisy bull gears. I remember the noise on my dads ZA MM. My uncle had a ZT MM and I guess years ago when a guy had gotten stalled on the side of the road he gave the guy a ride home to use the phone. The gears started to rattle in road gear like the do and the guy said....Do you think we are going to make it? lol

I have this thing I love my old truck. I some times think it is just fun to get in and just go. I have this new thing with the stock truck the millage just stopped but no big deal it just keeps going and reads how fast I am going. that is all you ask for a good old truck. They do not make them that way any more.

If that's your "old truck", I have a hard time believing it has any strange noises coming from it. From the driver maybe but not from the truck ...... ha!!! Fill us in on the campground, etc.

This last May Just before they open this camp ground. I was driving on Benton crossing road in the High Sierras. going to my parents house. I saw this camp ground closed just had to stop and take a picture (why Just because). I knew this camp ground would be full in June with campers who travel long hours. I do have noises in that old truck (why ) It is still All factory from back in 1966. This truck has not been touch. Paint, inside and engine Plus all running gear. Nothing has been changed. Great truck. That straight six engine 250 is the best.

Glad for you!! always nice when they run as they should.. I go through those moments when I start things up for hay season in the spring or first cutting.. Stuff seems to happen over winter in shed parked.. dont know why but does..

That's original paint? Unreal condition. I see trucks online at various auctions, everyone seems to put on the gross custom mag or chrome wheels, I love the steelies like yours with the little hub caps, etc. But I occasionally see some guys rod those trucks and still keep the steelies though, that's pretty cool. In the summer of '65, a co-worker and I drove up the Alaska Highway on our way to Whitehorse, Yukon (from here in central Alberta). Company truck was one just like yours (black with yellow front fender panels though). Good old six standard (column) ..... a guy learned to sleep on those vinyl bench seats sitting up when the other guy was driving. Long trip but the truck didn't miss a beat, can't remember if it was a Chevy or a GMC but it was a dependable beast.

I had a 65 Chevy pickup. Only vehicle I ever bought with out discussing it with the wife. Paid a whopping $250 for it and she still remembers that deal. I drove it until I started falling out of the floor so parked it.

Same. I have a hard time getting used to one of my kubota's. It sounds like it has a nasty valve tap, but it's been running perfect for years, through oil changes and lots of work.
