Tractor has always started hard on gas-choke is either too much or too little. Carb has to come off but how do you get to the front bolt nearest the motor. Looks like a real PIA.
Also had it warmed up (20 min. on diesel) and switched back to check if i could get it to run ok on gas, about 10 min. Touched the coil and it was hot. Could hold my fingers on it for 10-15 seconds--hot but not burning hot. New coil time? Thank you, Gary.

The problem is they are kind of finicky about the choke. Ours is the same way and has been for over 40 years. I just ran a WD-9 last week and it was the same. Just have to play with the choke to smooth it out. There is not much adjustment to those old carbs. If the coil is getting hotter than normal your ground out, wire is not hooked up or you need to shut the switch off to the coil. The butterfly in the manifold closes the carb side of the air off when changed over. also shuts the needle in the carb so it doesn't bounce while using the tractor. I would not switch it back from diesel to gas for experimentation. I would shut it down and restart it for trial purposes.

Actually i did shut it off and restarted it to work with the choke. I have had a WD9 for 48 years and it is not that fussy with the choke. Just choke it until it fires and gradually work the choke in and all is well. Thanks for the reply.

It's easier to just take the manifold off, carburetor and all. Then you can easily get to the carb nuts. You have to take the shutoff linkage and gas line off the carb anyway to remove it, and the manifold bolts are way easier to get to than the carb nuts.
