Building a Turnip Harevester

I am building a turnip harvester out of an old lockwood 8440 potato harvester.Near the rear cross there is a gearbox but there is no room to have the chain go straight from the sprocket on the gearbox to the sprocket on the drive shaft of the rear cross. My question is can i use an idler on the drive side of the chain to get around steel bar that is in the way? I have never seen an idler on the drive side so im curious if it will work
 
Should be able to use and idler like that........question is "it's turnips, why ruin a potato harvester"????? :lol: :lol:

Yes, it can be done. I would use as large sprocket as practical, with a sealed bearing.

But, if any way to get around it, cut a hole or notch and saddle the frame for the chain to pass through would be more economical and less to wear out.
 
Gareth I am curious or interested in where or how one gets enough turnip seed to plant 100 acres. I have to beg and borrow to get seed in this part of the country packed any more than 1 lb packs. Do you have a source for seed in the bulk. j
 
Farms in this area seed hundred of acres for breaking soil and to just build soil. When mature locals harvest all they want . Cattle also eat the tops. One guy feeds the field to hogs;
 
I have a 25 lb bag on my truck right now. Mixing them with oat seed to plant for deer and cows. Try Mummes Inc Hondo Texas or Douglas King seed in San Antonio. I don't know what these cost the landlord bought them. He wants them for the deer. Tony

Albert Lea Seed House sells turnip seed by the 50# sack. Or smaller amounts if you want.
