Cub alternator installation

Decided to change over to 12v. Bought the ABC524 alternator and mount from YT. Had a spare 12v coil. Installed everything as per the wiring
diagram supplied with the alternator. Took a 12 volt battery from the camper and hooked it up negative ground. Started tractor and no output
from alternator. Reved the engine up as fast as it would go and still no output. The only thing I didn't change is the amp meter. It shows a small
discharge. Went back over the wiring several times all is as per the wiring diagram. There is a diode between the plug on the alternator to the
ignition switch, I don't know what this is for but it passes current in one direction but not the other with an ohm meter. I am at a loss as to what
is wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Diode needs to pass current from ign sw to alternator. To do this the diode band must be the alternator end. Is it installed that way?

Did you check the output voltage with a volt meter?

It should show around 14.5 volts.

Possibly it is charging and the ampmeter is connected backward or faulty.

The diode is to supply excitation voltage to the #1 terminal, and prevent feed back which will keep the ignition circuit hot with the switch off. If you suspect that circuit to be the problem, with the engine running up to speed, momentarily jump the #1 to the battery post, see if it starts charging.
