OT Keeping Truck Dump Bed Elevated

To prevent water from pooling/remaining in the bed of my grain truck, I'd like to partially lift it and then block it up. (Lift cylinders leak a bit.) Is a 4 x 4 placed across the frame okay or is there a better idea? Thanks, kelly

hat 4x4 will be fine

Hey Kelly. Haven't heard anything out of you in a while. I hope things are going well on York Creek and have a great T'giving. john

I would think that should work fine, gentleman from my home town put a 4x4 longways under the elevated bed because cylinders leaked, knocked it out and it crushed him.

I would think that would leave a lot of the piston ram exposed to the weather encouraging any little timey scratches, etc. to start rusting and cause the seals to leak. That is the reason the lowners manuals always tell you to lower implements with external cylinders when not in use.

A 4x4 or 6x6 long enough to support both sides of the raised box on the frame should work fine. Leaving a wood floor grain box outside in the weather is not good long term. The exposed piston rods on the hoist cylinders should be chrome plated, and protected from weather/moisture by the bed itself. If your plan is long term outside storage coat wood floor with waste oil or lindseed oil, and put some clean heavy oil or grease on the exposed length of the cylinder rod(s).

I repainted the cab on a Chevy C60 farm truck with a 16' box once. I wasn't about to work on the back of the cab with just the hoist holding the box up, so I ran the box up and put a screw jack between the front spring hanger and the box on each side.

Even then, I didn't spend more time on the back of the cab than I had to.

Thanks for the replies. The truck actually is inside a 25' machine shed, but rain can blow in and I don't want it pooling in the bed. Thanks for all the info too. Kelly p s John, I'll try to send you a reply. k
