I remember my dad using one come haying season....

Yes they fit in your back pocket. Now when you stop to take a drink
you touch up the edge of your scythe and if you are working closer you
touch up your sickle. I can remember them a loooong time ago in an old
feed store. Work something like a modern day ceramic "steel" while
useing your knifes. Always remember them with a red wooden handle.
 
Not that style. I do have Pa's old sharpening hone to keep the pocket knife sharp for cutting summer sausage....or grasshoppers.
 
Yup, still have Dad's he bought new in the early 50's. Old one was worn so thin he thought it would break. I keep mine in the shop and use it for heavy sharpening--axe-corn knife and some de-burring.
 
butchering that's what we are doing this weekend have to get the knives out and run them over the tool above quick, then a few more times once we get cutting.
