Dealing with people!!! tire kickers I guess!! We have some items for sale (logging related) I will only take calls (wont do text or email) We get lots of calls and almost the first thing the guy does is start negotiating price! Yep sight unseen, I stop them and tell them I am not doing negotiation until there here looking at it. Most of the time that is the end of the call. What I don't get is why would some one make offers sight unseen (they may not want the item when they look at it) Was wondering if I should tell them half price to see if they would actually come??? Next up if they offer you $10000 instead of $15000 over the phone will they honor it?
I just don't get it as I will not do this. I will make an offer if I am there and want the item. Our price is clearly posted in the add too. Thanks for an thoughts, rant over.

Yep, Seems like most people just want to know the Bottom Dollar. Also hate them asking if it's still available? If my ad is up It's still there. I put that in my ad , Do you read? Also hate the people that don't remove their ad when Item has sold. But like you I won't negotiate on the phine.

Yes also burns me that I try to write a good description and they ask all the questions that are clearly stated in the add (example new 15/38 tires) Also burns me that people can't take the time to write a fair description. You will see some ads like, Allis Chalmers for sale, 1970 something vw beetle and that is all they write!!! grrrr

Look at it from the other side. It may be a 2 hour drive to see whatever it is you're selling and your price may be at the high end of the scale. I see nothing wrong with asking additional questions, even if they aren't worded in the most diplomatic way. Money is tight, people don't want to spend money and time driving to see something that might be priced kind of high, expecting that you'll deal a bit. I've looked at a lot of stuff that the price was said to be "firm", yet when I started to walk away, the guy wanted to dicker. It's understandable IMO. Doesn't mean you have to like it!

My father in law buys used equipment to resell, I would say over half the time he buys sight unseen. He cannot get everywhere, if he agrees to buy it you will get your money but if priced higher than he can make money on it for then why waste trip to look it over.

I guess I don?t understand the problem or why people don?t like it. As says OBO
There is a camper trailer with 5th wheel for $1000 for sale. I need the hitch on it. Would sell the rest or use for something else in 20 years(maybe). So I offer site unseen $700. I will take my chances at that as I can aford to lose a bit if it doesn?t sell. If he will sell for that I will drive an hour and pick it up. Do it all the time. With good photos I don?t need to see it. I never back out if I say I?ll take it. The. There are those who don?t like if you ask is it still available. You don?t know how often I have called and asked to come look at or whatever and they say( it?s sold long time ago) in the D it says if ad up still for sale. So you have to expect people to ask is it still available

I've bought and sold so been on both sides.

If the item is a distance away and a discretionary purchase. sometimes it's easier for both parties to know the bottom dollar rather than waste travel time or have the seller waste their time showing.

I've done the "If $XXX will buy it I will come look and if it meets my expectations I will buy right there"

I've sold bigger ticket stuff where I've stated in the ad the price and only accept offers if they are cash in hand in person, or if they don't like the price, don't shop for items in that price range.

I agree, You don't dicker when you go to the grocery store or the gas pump do you? When I get ready to sell something, I set a fair price and stick to it. If the potential buyer wants it fine and if he doesn't fine. If he doesn't want it someone else will. When I go look at something to buy, If it is a fair and honest price, I pay the man, if it isn't, I just say, sorry that is not what I looking for and I walk. I never try to set another mans price and I don't make offers, he knows what he stuff is worth more than I do.My time is way to valuable to argue over a few bucks.

As others have said if I have to drive a few hours I will try to set a price over the phone. Then we are not wasting each other's time. We all know that a lot of people think their stuff is worth a lot more than it is. Me included. I also know even though I have bought most my tractors pretty cheap I will have a heck of a time getting my money back. I once even offered a guy more money cuz I knew his tractor was priced low.

Most of the people that puts an add up DO NOT KNOW HOW TO REMOVE IT. Just lucky to figure out how to put add up in first place.

I've sold a lot of things online and through the paper, it is unbelievable how many people will set up a time to come, or say they will get back to you, or even say they will take it and be back to pick it up, and you never hear from them again. I have learned how to filter through phone calls and emails as to which ones may be serious. Also it's the first one to hand me the cash gets the item in most cases. There are still plenty of honest sincere people out there, just need to remember that people are people, and have different values, communication methods, and ways of doing business, and learn to deal with it, no cookie cutter answers.

If it is something I want I might ask if price is firm If I think it is a bit high.I bought 2 older hay rakes this fall sight unseen, just pictures and seller answering some questions by email. But no mater how the questions were answered as to condition I knew I was going to take them as I knew they were worth the asking price just for parts. Earlier bought 2 more rakes sight unseen from same person without asking any questions other than location and when can I see them to make the deal, knew they were worth the asking price just for parts.

A couple of times just recently I called on stuff that said "if the adds still up" only to be told it sold a couple of weeks ago. I always ask if it is still available first. If that offends the person, I just hang up.

I recently bought a motorhome that was advertised on Kijiji. It was a two day drive from my home. I called the seller and told him where I live and that I needed more info before I packed up and left home. I asked him dozens of questions and also if the price was firm. It was. I told him that if what he told me on the phone was true, I would buy it . If not I would be extremely angry with him. He agreed to not sell it until I had a chance to look at it. The date of inspection was firm. After that he could contact any other lookers. I ended up buying it. Sometimes you gotta call to get additional info.

My father-in-law would do that. He collected antiques, both dishes and furniture. He knew the market and if someone didn't know what they had and priced it 'way too low, my FIL would insist on paying a fair price.

He was a straight laced Methodist, although there were stories going around about his younger days. He also did custom fertilizing, and in the entire 17 years I knew him from the time my wife and I started dating until he passed away, I only heard him swear twice. Both times were when he burnt his fingers with anhydrous ammonia.

Most of the calls i get are from people who are afraid of there own shadow. They always ask how "long have you owned it", " why are you selling it", "has anyone else looked at it,and why didn't they buy it"?. Then they bring someone along to hold there hand to look at it. I had a guy ask me to try out a two bottom plow before he would buy it.Everyone is afraid of being scammed.

If everyone was honest and priced stuff according to what it was worth tire kicking wouldn't be necessary, but it's not always that way.
Bought a truck nearly 800 miles away, plenty of photos, guy told me everything he could about the truck, he knocked $500 off to help with my travel cost. When I got there IMO the truck was better than described so I paid his price, did the paper work and drove it home.
Same deal on a round baler 300 miles away, when I got there it was just as described and priced accordingly, paid the man and brought it home.
Bought a tractor on auction 400 miles away, there where a few photos and described as needing transmission work, got it at a price I could make repairs and be ok with, had to wire the money at end of auction.
When I got there to pick it up $2000 worth of pto parts where missing from the back of the tractor, no photos from the back. I mentioned the missing parts and they say I bought it as is and they had my money, I could take the tractor or they'd sell it again but I wasn't getting my money back.
Parted the tractor out over 5 years just to break even.
8 years ago I was looking at a couple skid loaders, one low hour machine 80 miles away that needed tracks due to being used on a demolition site, another 500 miles away also needing tracks they said where worn out on hard surfaces cleaning horse barns. Hooked the goose neck up and drove 500 miles, overnight stay just to find a worn out machine with a wrist sized chunk a wood stuck through the front belly pan, pins and bushings shot from never being greased.
Guy started dropping his price and finally said to just make a offer, told him it would just make him mad, got it the truck and drove off. Guess he thought since I'd driven 500 miles I wouldn't leave without it, I did.
On the way back we drove by the one 80 miles from home, told the guy what it would cost me to replace the tracks and that made his price a couple thousand to high, he dropped his price, I payed him and brought it home. But I was ticked for day about driving a thousand mills (round trip) to look at junk.

I've worked in the logging field, no way I'd buy sight unseen. The owner and I have traveled hundreds of miles looking at logging and sawmill equipment. Some times it's what they say it is, other times it was painted over junk.

Some times you just have to go kick the tires, just to make sure they don't fall off.

Yup and the ads with no description often say no time wasters. No trouble, you can?t take a decent picture or provide a description I will not waste my time.

How a item is priced and how much detail is included the pictures and the description can make a big difference on what kind of buyers are attracted enough to inquire, how much time I need to spend with the buyer, and what the final price is. If I don't want buyers to waste my time, I spend extra time writing the description so they have an accurate description and don't need to waste my time. It's possible to have about 50 percent of the first lookers buying your items for your asking price.

I avoid using major round numbers when pricing an item, and I don't ask more than 10 percent over my absolute bottom price. $15,000 leaves the buyer wondering if the seller wants $14,000, $12,500 or $10,000, so it's safest to start with a $10,000 offer with the idea they can get it for $12,500 maximum. If an item is worth about $15,000, most of the time an asking price of $15,500, $16,000, $16,500 or $14,500 should get a higher initial offer and a higher sale price than an asking price of $15,000 will.

Speaking as a once upon a time used car salesman, haggling is the fun part of a deal.

On a private deal, I once sold a fellow a Chevy Monte Carlo. We got down to arguing over $20. He knew he was going to buy it and I knew I was going to sell it, we were just having fun arguing over that $20. I finally gave him the $20 and sold it.

Another time I bought a well used pickup from a large GMC dealer. The salesman and I got down to arguing over $5. I forget what the final price was, but it ended in $2.50 'cause we split the $5. I thought my wife was going to kill me.

That's where my wife and I differ. When I start haggling on a deal, I usually see it through to the end, whatever the outcome. My wife will make someone an offer, and if they don't go for it she'll give them her phone number and walk off.

What ticks me off is people who think they always have to get the better end of the deal. Years ago a had a truck toolbox. Paid $10 for it. It sat around for a while until decided to sell. There was a guy in town who was a notorious crook. I priced the truck box at $40. He said that was way too high. I said make an offer. He said $5. I said meet me half way at $25. Long story short he went bragging all over town how he chewed me down $15. I have a truck for sale on the internet. Was a Titan Machinery truck originally. Worth about $3000-$3,500. I have it priced at $4k obo. But I would come down if some one was serious. But when people think I'm going to trade it for their junk it ticks me off to no end. Or when they have some old car or truck that needs $2k-$3k of work just to make it driveable and think that its worth KBB "excellent condition" price.

Your wife must be related to me because that is me I will make an offer and that is it (walk off) THAT IS AFTER I LOOKED AT THE ITEM AND WANTED IT

Don't agree if I am only willing to pay so much and an item is priced way more I will not call on it at all. Don't agree if its 5 miles or 500 its up to them to come and look at it That is not my fault.

Seen that too Ray and don't get it. Never had much luck with that crowd either.
