Bloody Butcher Corn

Here is a picture of the Bloody Butcher corn we grew this year. I saved out some of the choice ears for seed. After I shelled them out, I ended up with 70 lbs. That is way more than I will ever use, but it was too nice not to save. We had a good growing season and much of the stand was over 10' tall.

We sold pumpkins and fall produce and planed a lot of indian corn to sell. It comes in many colors and can be popped. We also bundled the stalks and sold them.

I have a friend that is 80 years old that still runs a water powered mill that grinds corn meal and flour. His biggest seller is Bloody Butcher corn meal. People drives for miles to get it. His biggest problem is he is getting too old to raise his own corn and it is getting harder and harder to find someone that is still raising it and getting someone to sell it to him. He also sells buckwheat flour and open pollinated white and yellow meal. His mill has been operating since the late 1700's.

Worked at a garden store, I brought in some hands of field corn to sell along side the Indian corn, co-worker said "Look at that bright yellow Indian corn!"

We used red or purple corn in specific spots as markers when we planted seed corn test plots in farmers' fields. Two rows wide, 20 feet long, the dark plants stood out like sore thumbs from the combine, you could make sure you were in exactly the right spot for data collection.
