Injector pump on D-3400 Hercules

Have Stanadyne DB pump. Marks on flywheel and pump where I want them, then the pump shaft turns in timing gear when trying to tighten the nut. If I remove the coupling shaft from the pump and hold the other end while tightening, how can I get the shaft properly indexed to the gear? Thanks, Fritz

Does the drive gear have a key groove cut in the bore? If so shaft should have a key or pin in the taper for timing alignment. Some late model engines use no key or pin, on those use paint thinner to clean both the shaft taper and gear bore of any oil/grease. With the gear nut in place hold the shaft end with taped pliers while tightening the nut with an end wrench. Hopefully after gear is snug you can do a final torque and shaft will stay in time.
