Year and origin of 3-71?

While we're posting about Detroits, it's a good time time to ask;

I've come up with a 3-71 on an irrigation pump, all mounted on a trailer. It hasn't run since who knows but does turn.

I haven't had any luck finding the year or decoding the model online. It seems to be earlier than what's on the serial # lists I've found so far.

Model 3055C Serial 3a-12086

It has these numbers on the block and on a long tag on the valve cover and on the bellhousing. Under the faded and chipping Detroit green, the base paint coat is yellow.

I posted a page on vintage photos, as I don't know how to get it to post on here as it isn't on a file sharing site where I can just supply a link. If you can't read it get me your email address and I'll send it directly to you.

Another old saying about a Detroit--If they'll turn over they'll start!---Tee

And if they don't shut off they will run away! Seen one do it, scared the crap out of me! Good story tho.

If you rebuild it . Use the N series sleeves/pistons, “C” California injectors up to C70, and the updated springs for both the cam followers and valve springs .
About 130HP at 2300rpm without being over fueled or excessive smoking.

I drove a lot of those old Green Leakers years ago and every morning you dump in a gallon of oil then check it,then grab the starting fluid.

That would be more than enough. The prospective recipient is an HD6G track loader. I have an HD6 Dozer with the AC Buda engine. It was stuck from rain in two cylinders when I bought it. Unfortunate as it had low hours on a rebuild. I managed to get it going but had to use the head off the track loader. The detroit is kind of going backwards but I can get parts for one and it will fit in there. Almost no parts for the early AC Budas.

They're geared for 1800 RPM so that should all work out.

Hello CenTex Carmelo,

Serial # and model is stamped on the side of the engine. Right side looking from the flywheel end. Look at the picture. Model # is 8 digits just below the serial #. It will read line this 1546 1545. Valve cover label usually have the same info, but not all survive,

Guido.
