Good battery charger?

Bought a shnouer(spelling?) battery charger a couple months back. This model was a "smart" charger.supposedlly could tell when it was connected to a bad battery.Well according to this charger ,every battery I put on charge was bad;4 total.I know for a fact at least 2 of them were good. Anyone know of an old style charger with the needle indicator that works as it should?

I've got almost a dozen chargers that I've picked up at auctions, all work good except one, its sopposed to kick off when battery is charged but don't. All of them are shumacker, or some such spelling, and all have the charge indicator needle.

Shumaker (spelling) ? Pretty much any brand that isn?t automatic . I have a John Deere on wheels Napa also has a good one . I had a John Deere automatic charger and just like you it wouldn?t charge a battery that was dead I sent it back and got the bigger one

I think with most of the new automatic chargers if the battery voltage is below about 8 they won't turn themselves on. I have heard of people using a 9 volt battery to get the charger started. The best solution is don't ever run the batteries dead, if you leave them like that for any time they are usually junk.

The other poster is correct in that many of the NEW chargers will not charge a battery that has too low of voltage. I have a 12 volt jump pack. I hook it to the dead/low battery and then the smart chargers will charge it. Actually it will charge both up to full charge.

The best regular charger I have found is the Schumacher Farm and ranch model. 10/30 amp charge and 200 amp boost. It also will charge 6 volt batteries too. It is a regulated charger too so it will not over charge a battery. I have several of them. The oldest is over 30 years old. You can buy them in the $100-120 range.

they dont sell a GOOD batry charger anymore , you have to go to a Old School Farmers Auction to get a good one ,, And Be Prepared to Bid , Because Everyone That WORKS out there knows This ,, ..The modernbulshyt smartazchargers are expensive , Because they are designed by stupid yuppiwastedphkx who have no idea of how to make something reliable and dependable and simple , much less figure out how to run this country.

now ,My Above post was not nice ,but I Am Disgusted With The smart Chargers saying "NO good!, BUY ANOTHER BATTERY ", when i know durn well i can get it to charge if i use a old fashioned charger,. .i was not aware that you could still buy a charger like jd seller shows ,, I have 4 exactly like those , down to 2 now , and they last very well , But they wont Stand Up to getting runover with a 1070 Case. ,

yeah ,I was torqued up from watching" SCANDALOUS" and that show just pizes me the wrong way ,.,we have an entire group of people that think elections are like the final 4 ball games, always looking for excitement , instead of responsible contentment. and therefore we get stuk with junk to break rules above the law and make rules against us ,.

This is about the same thing I do. I take a manual charger I found in an old storage room, I'd say from early 2000's and will hook that up to any battery below 8 volts for about half and hour, then quickly switch over to the auto charger. Normally the battery will hold a charge above 8 volts long enough for me to hook up and plug in the auto charger and it'll kick in. Done this on 4 or 5 batteries no problem.

I have two of these one is 28 years old and the other 18 never had a problem with them other than the timer switch, they will get'er done rat now... This is a battery charge not a toy wanna be charger you do not have to wait it will start most dead battery's rat now and charge them in 30 min.... If it won't charge a battery in 30 min its no good but of course Y'all have been trained are lead otherwise and duped into those slow arse trickle chargers... You asked this is the real deal...

Before someone say's its best to charge a battery slow "tell me ask does your alternator charge your battery slow"

Your alt gets on with the program rat now it does not wait...

A neighbor who is wintering in Florida asked me to get his wife's minivan started and moved into the garage so the plowing contractor won't run into it (the van hadn't been started in at least 3 months). Of course when I attempted to start I found the battery DEAD flat.

I located a B&D "smart charger" in his garage. When I hooked it up it the charger immediately displayed a "bad battery - shorted cell" error message then just sat there. Frustrated I returned home but left the charger connected.

When I returned 24 hours later, the charger display now said the battery was fully charged(!) The car started right up and ran fine.

The take away: Leave a charger connected to a "bad" battery for a few hours before declaring it a lost cause.

I still use a "dumb phone".

And several "dumb" battery chargers.

Works for me.

What are you gaining by using a "smart" charger that's gonna tell YOU how it's gonna be?

Have one in my shop. Always gets wiped down and put back in original box after using 17 years old.
