Plasti-gage

I've viewed several you tube videos of engine rebuilds. When they use plasti-gage to check rod and main bearing clearances. What if you do not get the clearance specified. Too loose, too tight. Just wondering on a rainy cold Saturday morning. gobble

Couple of examples I've dealt with;

1951 Ferguson TEA-20:

Too tight or too loose, is an issue with the grinder that provided the service. If your problem and no recourse with the maxhine shop. (This is old school) the shimming of the rod cap, grinding of the rod cap, scraping of the insert (not good with multi layer inserts "Most of them") shim the insert using tapered shims (They exist) Jim

(quoted from post at 18:51:43 03/24/18) First, I'd try to find someone who can spell.

I doubt it is a spelling problem from the way he presents his material......more like a typo.....some of us never do that, I guess?

Tom as others said on a precision insert bearing there could be misfit issues. Such as grinding improper bearing size. NOW WHAT THEY DID NOT TELL YOU many older engines had a shim package (Poured Babbitt bearings). So you would go through this process over and over adding (or subtracting) shims to get it right.

Many auto and tractor companies used to offer slightly undersize rod and main bearings specifically for tightening up "sightly loose"clearances. I have fixed many engines with excessive clearance by installing .001" or .002" undersize bearings with no machine-work needed. Not as common though as they used to be.

Tom, you spelled rain wrong. It should have been spelled S-N-O-W. Or at least that is what it was here in NWIA. (I know, I shouldn't abbreviate)

In south central Iowa the robins are still finding worms in my yard. No s-n-o-w accumulation. But thanks for the spelling lesson. lol gobble
