What was the price of gas when you were married?

Crazy Horse’s post about gasoline pricing got me to thinking about the price of gas ‘way back when’. When Marilyn and I were married in August of 73 we were in the middle of the first gas shortage that I can remember. We wondered if we would find gas on our honeymoon to Colorado Springs. Finding gas was not a problem but the price went up. Gas was .38 here in northwest Iowa but along I 80 in Nebraska it was up to .43, the most I had ever paid. I thought it was awful.

What was the price of gas when you were married? I remember dad saying he put the crop in one spring on 16 cent gas but only five years old at that time.

When my wife and I were married in '64, it was less than $0.25 per gallon. I thought prices were crazy when they went to $0.25. jal-SD

I think it was close to 30 cents in 1967 when we got married. Amoco white gas was about 39 cents. I never bought it and I told folks no way
would I ever pay 39 cents for gas.

When I turned 16 , in 1976 , gas was .49.9 per gallon. 5 years later when we got married, gas was then sold
by the liter no longer by the gallon. price per liter was .34.9 . Quite a jump over a short time , but I saw
gas today for $1.32.9 per liter , while on a trip into Toronto .Id sure like to buy gas for .39.9 a liter
again.

The lowest price that I ever saw for gasoline was during a gas war in, IIRC, 1970.

It was in the low 20s, high teens all summer and went as low as 13.9 for a couple of weeks.

I was working as a refueling technician at a Standard station in Terre Haute, IN at the time. The Standard station never went below mid twenties.

We were married in 1962, will be 56 years in August. There were some gas wars going on in Minneapolis and I filled up once for 10 cents a gallon. Had a 1959
Ford Fairlane that got about 20MPG on highway.

I got married in May of 1980 in Rapid City SD and gas was just over a dollar a gallon. I had moved to Rapid City in December of 1976 and it had just hit 51 cents a gallon.

$0.169/gal., Ft. Wayne, IN 1964. Marriage license was on time payments, $2 down and all I made the rest of my life. Ha, Ha!!

I remember in the early 80's as a kid we'd get gas for the dirt bike for 35c/l. $4 would buy a pop, chips and have enough to fill the bikes tank. Cash in your bottle and buy a half a dozen 2c gum. Thought we had er' made!

Got married in 66 and the cut rates were 24 to 26 and major brands were 32. When the gas shortage hit in 75 was taking riders to work and didn't know if I could afford to drive, gas was 49 cents.

Between $5.50 and $1.50, I got married in 1989, the year before I got married I was stationed in Greece with the Air Force, we were at a remote detachment without AAFES gas, gas on the local economy was
between $5.00 and $6.00 US ( at least I think as you had to convert liters to gallons and Drachma to Dollars) and since I didn't ship a car there (big mistake) I only bought gas when I got caught somewhere
in a government vehicle and no military station was available. Once I got back the the US I really didn't pay much attention to the price of gas, I had bought a Mustang SVO and it burned premium gas so it
was a tad bit more expensive.

We lived in South GA between Tyty and Sumner. Gas was .279 with gusts up to .33. The
year was 1970. We have been together since then. There was a Dixie Oil Co. station in
Tifton that would stage a "Gas War". Gas would drop down to around .20 then. We had a
VW. Dsmythe

Got married in '66, just remember my Sports Fury held $5.00 worth if the tank was really empty, had a 25 gal. tank. Thought that was terrible.

Gas was about .33 a gallon back then. I remember a twenty would fill the car from empty and we could got to A&W and eat then a drive-in and still have change. Right after I retired from the Army one of my kids ask to borrow money for a date. I, without thinking handed him a twenty. He ask "what am I supposed to do with this"? He was still in high school and just started working part time. I wound up letting him have 60. Amazing what 23-24 years will do!

back in 84 when we got married I think it was .89 a gal but not positive, however I know for sure when I got my first car when I was 16 it was .79 a gal and was driving a 68 lemans had some of the look of a GTO. I wish I had some of my old cars back, the one I am looking for is a 1971 and a half Camaro SS, that's the one with the shark mouth, silver with 2 black strips down the hood.

fixerupper,

I haven't a clue. Gas is kind of like milk, we need it - so I buy it, but I don't pay a lot of attention to the price (because I have to buy it anyway).

We probably frequent about 3 different stations depending on the town we are in when we need gas... and I mostly use only 1 grocery store in a small town.

Grew up in southern Idaho gas was .27 to .33 in 1965 when I got married move to Portland Ore. next day after we got married thought I'd come to heaven gas .19 wine in grocery stores and cigarettes $1.49 a carton. Did see Regal stations .14 during gas wars.

I started my career as a Chemist in the Petroleum/Refinery industry
in the Research & Development Division after college in 1981.

One of the perks for working there was, we got our gasoline for FREE!

YUP, we paid nothing for our gas.

When I was a kid I remember people putting ‘a dollar’s worth’ of gas in the tank. That would have been around five gallons. I remember my granddad buying a brand new 1966 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 that took premium gas. My dad, being a penny pincher thought it was almost a sin for him to buy that car. Twelve miles per gallon of premium, or ‘ethel’ as it was called then, that cost maybe 2 cents more than regular.

.239 and the attendant checked the oil and brought the dip stick to your window to see, checked the coolant and washed the
windshield and rear window. all with a smile. 1965.

We owned no vehicle when we got married in '68, went two years without believe it or not. But in '68, a good pair of shoes
for walking probably cost $15 or so, cheaper than buying gas.

Gas war going on in town, station I used to work for filled up
the car for 9cents gallon. Got home 2 weeks later it was
23cents.

Well the price of gas on this date 50 years ago today was 27.9 gal. sure doesn't seem like my wife and I have been Married that long, still very happy.
