that is the original slate floor,,layed in dirt, Notice the built in cubby holes,,they are original,,and the rusted hook from the ceiling is original too.I did not plaster it smooth, because the parts of the original plaster that ws remaining when I did it was not smooth,,I wanted it to look original as possible.

Do you get tornado's up there ever?My grandma had one it was kinda of scary,as a kid.Doubled as a tornado shelter.

and the little house is a summer kitchen, where they did canning and cooking in the hot weather to keep the main house cooler.behind the little house is a butcher house with a stove with a large kettle,

I posted a few more pictures for you,,,you have the lifestyle I often dreamed of,the building you made to cut meat etc,,all of you and your wife's lifestyle really appealed to me. I could have lived at this farm and been very happy,,but compromise is a big part of life,,everyone has to be some happy,,its hard for one person to be completely happy without hurting others.

Back in 1970 when we built our house we built a 8x8' root cellar into our foundation, with access from the cellar. We used it a lot for the first 10 years, but now we have a cold pantry built into an enclosed breezeway that keeps potatoes, onions squash etc., plus all our canned goods just as well, and much easier for the wifey to grab something to whip up a supper.

I was just thinking of you.I made some breakfast and thought some v 8 juice would go good with it.Went down to the shelves,,,,//no more homemade juice. The one you taught me to make .None left,,,didnt make any last year,,was too sick,,,,cant make any this year,,wont have any san marzano plum tomatoes,,,,,just another kick ,,,why is it when you feel down,,the little things that make you feel worse keep on hitting you?

The only thing I would add is a nice bright LED fixture. Everything
looks very well kept and spiffy. Nice job. Sad thing is, foolish
people have those dug out and filled in cause they think that they are
dangerous.

The doors keep water from entering,,and the walls dont leak at all,,the floor is set in dirt,,not concrete,,it gets damp from condensation,,stays cool year round and never freezes that I know of,,you can stand upright when you are in it,,have to duck your head going down the stairs, there are cubby hole shelves on the way down the stairs too. When we first went to the farm in around 1965 there were old rusty cans of lard in the root cellar and a few other old things. It was used as sort of a Refrigerator years ago I believe.I wish I could meet the people that built it.Imagine digging it out with a pick and shovel..designing this all out of stone picked from the fields, and making this work of art.The stairs are all flat stone. The walls are thick,,layers of stone and mud intertwined .Then many coats of some kind of plaster..It looked like some hair was in the final coat of plaster too. Then was a whitewash coat too.It is an amazing design and really is something to behold.

Nice so if they decide to nuke us your
preparations are complete remember the
sixty's and duck and cover ? At least you
have a good tornado shelter move a tv and
recliner in and good to go.

Neat!
Must have a low water table for that not to flood.
Always found things like this from the old days quite interesting.
