WD Allis Starter Parts For Rebuild

The bushings and brushes in the starter for my Allis Chalmers WD were worn out. Went to the local AGCO dealer and all they could recommend was a complete re manufactured starter for close to $300. Got bushings and brushes from NAPA for less than $20. AGCO did have a part number for the brushes but not stocked. No information at a AGCO about the bushings. Put everything back together tonight with parts from napa and the starter spins like a top. Not trying to bash AGCO just a heads up for someone else who might have the same situation.

I use a local auto electric shop that will rebuild a component. I usually drop it off in the morning, run around for a few hours and do some business, then stop back in and pick the offending unit up. It's usually about half the cost of a rebuilt unit, and less than a quarter the cost of new.

We had a retired guy here, who had worked in a JD dealer repair shop, and he had the knowledge and the equipment to check and rebuild starters and generators. He replaced the bearings in mine and adjusted the shims in it as well. The shims were not even something I would have thought about checking. I like to do my own repairs, but there is usually something a little more to it than I might be aware of.
