Tractor not running right

I have a Ferguson to30 that was converted to 12volt using a generator and external voltage regulator. I recently updated my coil to a 12 volt with a built in resistor to save my points. The problem l am having is my amp gauge is reading high 20 to 30 and my coil heats up and tractor runs bad. I have replaced the voltage regulator, replaced the wiring , added a external resistor, cleaned generator brushes, still the same result. Help

VR is not working right or is not wired up correctly. If it is putting out 20 plus volts the problem has to be in the wiring or V.R.

20-30 amps is pretty normal at least for the first say 10 minutes or so. As for coil heating up that to is normal. As for not running like it should you need to do some simple trouble shooting

#1 check that your spark at the center wire of the cap is a nice blue/white spark and the same at the plug wires. Needs to also jump a 1/4 inch gap or more at all of them
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes. Yes do catch it so as to time it and to make sure it is not full of dirt and water.
#3 when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner and dumped the water and mud out and filled with good oil
