Warning Light Wiring

Wanting to put a warning light on my Massey Harris 33 for when the key is on but the tractor is not running. Purpose of it is so I don?t forget to turn the key off and cook the coil. How can I wire it so that when I turn the key on, the light comes on, but when I start the tractor with the starter button, the light shuts off?

An oil pressure switch will do the job. They come normally open or normally closed and different actuating pressures. Napa has quite a selection (or least used to) That's what I use to close the hot circuit for my 12 volt alt conversions. You want one that will close the circuit when the oil pressure goes to zero, similar to the o/p idiot light.......

I put an amber strobe light on the forklift at work just for that reason. Been on there for 10 years now and not a single incident of the ignition being left on!

I just let it flash all the time the ignition is on. It draws a minuscule amount of current.

To make it come on only when the engine is not running, you could wire it like an oil pressure light. It would need to have 2 leads, a positive that would wire to the ignition circuit, and a negative that would wire to a normally closed oil pressure switch.

NO reason you can't install an indicator light in your "dash" that's on when the ignition is on, should cost less than ten bucks.

On the other hand, WHAT are you doing that results in the ignition switch being "ON" when the engine is not
running?

Wireing is simple. wire one wire to ignition switch the other to the charge wire from alternator or generator. When you turn on ignition the light will ground thru the charging unit.when the charging unit works your will have two plus wires going to light and no ground and light will go out

Why not let the light stay on? The 1939 Fords had a red light that is on with the switch.

Could it be a diesel that you shut of fuel to stop and electric still stays on for charging circut. If I rememeber right Uncle years ago has a 70D that I drove for a bit and ws like that. The key had to be turned on for ignation to starting motor but tractor after starting would run with switch in off position but generator would not charge. Does not a MH diesel have an electric starter instead of pony engine? I think they made a diesel in that model but scarce.

(quoted from post at 03:13:20 07/17/18) Wireing is simple. wire one wire to ignition switch the other to the charge wire from alternator or generator. When you turn on ignition the light will ground thru the charging unit.when the charging unit works your will have two plus wires going to light and no ground and light will go out

Sounds like the easiest way to go. Thanks.

Seriously Massey, you're setting yourself up for failure. I would save all the time and money and just make myself remember to turn the key off. Sort of like when you leave your house and lock the door, or hang up the phone after a phone call. Or remembering where you park after going into Home Depot. If you use your light system, you will always be looking to see what the light is telling you. What if you forget to look for the light? Then you're back where you started. You are going to end up with a Rube Goldberg system ..... see below.
Massey 33s light remembering system .....
