Best Way to Shorten PTO Shaft???

I got my own ideas...

What is the best way to measure and shorten a PTO shaft to fit an implement (one cut vs multiple cuts/trial and error).

Thanks!
Bill

I shortened ours when I added a slip clutch, so I just cut off whatever the slip clutch was. I might of done some checking to see how much engagement the shaft had, it was a long time ago. I would say you want maximum engagement without it ever bottoming out.

Sometimes you just can't get there. The shaft on my tiller is too short with the lift all the way up but if it was any longer it would bottom out when almost all the way down.

I make the measurement with the lift at the shortest distance and cut half inch shorter. May be a better way but I haven't found it.

Youtube! There is a video on there from an implement company discussing a good process. I got the link from this website a few years ago. If I can find it I will post it.

I always cut the same amount off of each half of the shaft and guard when shortening a driveline.

First thing to do is check to see which end of the shaft bottoms out first and how much then cut that amount off the one that is bottoming out to get them even then you can start taking
a little off each end.

Also pends on type of female shaft ... some have a welded fitting on the end, so you can only cut the male.

newer shafts you can cut both equally, but try to keep 12 inches of overlap where possible.

With the pto shaft disconnected put your tractor into a tight turn till the rear tires about hit implement. Shorten pto shaft just a tad more.
