Too fed up not to be kneejerk

Ever been so tired of a piece of junk that your first reaction when something goes wrong is to get rid of it? That new Allis Chalmers lawn tractor that we bought a few years ago has me that way. I went to move bales this morning and the wife was gonna mow the lawn. When I got home before dinner,it sat in front of the shop and just part of one yard was mowed. I got on it,it started and died and wouldn't start again. I asked her what happened, she said the deck stopped running, but the engine was still running alright.

I gave it a shot of ether and that's the only way it would run. I told her I wasn't putting one more dime in to that miserable thing. I started checking CL for another mower then put an ad of my own on looking for somebody who buys, sells and trades them who might want to take it on trade.

I went back out after dinner and started checking things with a test light, got it to run a few times intermitently. I finally found a wire that was burned in two on the electric deck clutch. I spliced a new piece in and she's out there mowing now,but one of these days,I'm really gonna be in the wrong mood when that thing pukes out and I'm gonna haul it out in an open field and set fire to it. It's been in the shop more than it's been here at home since we bought it.

Randy we have two commercial cub called the TANK--ZERO TURNS. One has the Kawasaki and the other has the Honda. Both have been excellent--bought the Honda over in WISC.on a trip back from an Iowa wedding. They are built very heavy duty and that Honda-thinking 23-24 HP will go thru anything. Watch Craigs list and you can buy one of them with low hours for decent funds.
The Honda one was owned by a dad who had passed and his kid didn't need it. a little over 3K WITH VERY LOW HOURS....

It's usually some small piece of equipment, an electronic gadget or old tool that goes straight to the scrap pile when it lets me down for the last time. At that point I've prob gotten more life out of it than it had to give, so I have no regrets. With something a bit more pricey like your AC tractor, I might consider advertising it for an attractive price, sell it in good working condition without hiding anything from the buyer, and move on. My main issue is the time and frustration involved in keeping a reluctant machine going. They usually don't break down just as you've finished mowing the lawn LOL

Over 30 years ago I purchased a New Yorker she had lean burn system nothing but troubles. I had two good days, what a headache with brand new tires it would get stuck on bananna peel going down hill.My first and last Mopar went back to Ford. Finally I gave it away and all I heard was complaints from the guy over it wished I Hauled it to the junk.Scott

in 1972 my grandfather bought a new 312 Hydro Allis Mower. It out lived him & it appears it's going to
out live me too? Still is the nice running tractor on One engine over haul 10+ years ago. Doesn't share all that
electronic BS the new machines do.

Is that for real ? They brought that name back ? I sure did not know that !
So is that made by MTD ?

No wonder your having trouble, that one is made by AYP, they badge them with all kind of names, Craftsman, Husqvarna, Cub Cadet, MTD, Poulan, you name it.
I?ve went through four of them in 20 years, frontends, bushings and decks never held up, always working on them when I needed to be mowing, probably going to Hell for sure because of my language I used fooling with those AYP made mowers.,Five years ago I borrowed $6500 from the credit union and went and bought a commercial grade zero turn mower made by Gravely, built like a tank, no more cussing and fussing for me

Mine was a power washer... I bought it used..Hausfield Campbell type 2300psi etc etc.. It was real good for few years then went to crop...I put a new plug and play carb on it and a new pump.. Runs and stops.. tares the old arm up trying to get it running again.. runs few sec stops.. have messed with this all summer... THEN

It took me over 2.5 hours to wash down my truck... I had it.. went and bought a Simpson 3400...starts one pull and has way more power just because of the 3400 over 2300...so far love it... and my arm and shoulder love it too..

Made by Simplicity Briggs and Stratton. The dealer said they took them on because they were the only brand they could find that weren't made by MTD. My son has a Simplicity version of it,looks identical except for the color and he hasn't had a lick of trouble as far as I know.

Yup, I'll never again have any respect for the Husqvarna name.

For the past 3 days, I've been farting around with my 22hp Husqvarna mower. The belt decided it wanted to be replaced. The mower was bought late in 2016. After just a few times mowing, the left spindle housing broke and the blade dug deep in the ground. Contacted a lot of different people/places before finally getting through to the folks who handle the warranty claims. They said at first that they were not going to replace the spindle, as that part is not covered by the warranty. ...It was about this time that I made another trip into orbit!

Well, they finally relented and sent out a replacement spindle. In the meantime, I ordered a replacement from Amazon as it would get here much quicker. Thought I'd be smart and get one with a grease zerk. Wrong! Not enough height to have a zerk sticking out the top of the spindle shaft. So for a while, I couldn't mow with the deck at highest setting.

Now for another strange thing. Since new, this mower scalps the ground when lower than the highest setting. When I pull onto a hard, level surface, cannot move the adjustment lever lower than the '3' position, and the deck stops moving halfway between '3' and '4'.

Well, the replacement spindle arrived and, when I went to remove the Amazon spindle, one of the bolts broke. On the original spindle, three corners of the casting broke, along with their respective bolts. Yesterday and today I've been trying to find my grade 8 replacement "thru" bolts, as the first two bolts on the right spindle broke with almost no force. Today I tried to remove the other two carefully -- they broke also.

So, now I have to make a choice: do I order another new spindle, but without the zerk? Or do I try to drill out another spindle? Hmm...I wonder if the drill bit would stay on the bolt or slide into the softer aluminum? Well, guess I'm ordering a spindle!

I'm getting sick-n-dang tired of everything these days being engineered to fail.

btdt. Bought a used Cadillac. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong with that piece of----. I kept fixing it until the same stuff started going wrong again. I only had it 11 months. Couldn't stand it any longer. It sure was a sweet ride when it was working though.

Yep, riding mowers suck !
Got tired of constantly doing more and more things on my old Sears I dragged home from a scrap pile. I put a motor on it , cause it didn?t come with one. Changed the transaxle, used one from another old wreck. And rebuilt the mower deck, piece at a time. It worked and still does, but it is rough and slow and loud.
I went out last year and bought a new Kubota Zero turn, been good so far.

Pretty happy with mine, both of my newer ones are 30 years old this summer, did have to buy a PTO belt after I ran a stick through it.

Stuff, older or newer, breaks down, and it seems like it's more frequent the newer you go, so toss'in out the old krap and buying new doesn't help once the warranty runs out.

Give yourself a pat on the back that you were able to figure out what was wrong and repair it.

NOT sure what you are "beach'in" about, you got 'er done!

Oh yes. I bought this tractor last year and it's been a piece of crap. I honestly believe it's possessed. Every time I go to use it something breaks. I fix it only to find something else broken. It broke down alongside the road a month ago and had to be towed and pushed into the barn. I am still so disgusted with it I haven't even looked at it to try to figure out what's wrong this time. Instead of selling it I'm tempted to park it in the driveway and seeing if it would make a good bonfire.

Next time buy a real tractor for mowing. My 88 (rt) and 92 do nothing but run and use 1/2 the fuel doing it. I've had them for 15 and 20 years respectively.

Yup, everybody's got $15,000 to drop on a lawn mower...

Before you use the word "used" realize that good, ready-to-use used equipment is far and few between. People use the good equipment, and dump the junk, so 99% of what's for sale, contains someone else's problems.

I know right where you are at with that name, used to make Great chain saws,, no clue today on those but their mowers are JUNK they bought out Dixon ZTR mowers while I was a dealer quality went out the window the first year they were making them,, I dropped being a dealer that year when the first two I ordered in and sold had the same LH rear wheel hub come loose from the hydro unit and take out the shaft and hub on them the first week of use,, right @ 500 each for the new unit to fix them and get this ZERO warranty as they said I could just drive the worn wallered out hub back on the axle and tighten the nut and add a Locknut which all the Dixon units always had,, said they were saving money not using a lock nut what the heck? I ATE both of those repairs as no way was I going to tell the owners their brand new machines needed a 500 dollar part not covered by the mfg,,, then a week later they both had the mower drive belt slipping,, I went and picked them up again at my cost and found they had moved a idler pulley mounted on the deck so that the belts had almost no "adjustment" to keep the belt tight after the initial break-in stretch,, I redrilled the mounting holes and put them back where they were the last 5 years Dixon had been making them and all was good,, when a Husq rep came by to sign me up as a dealer I gave him a REAL piece of my mind,, I chewed him out so bad he was hanging his head big time,, I also told him if he ever came into my driveway again I would whip his butt but good, I guess you can see I am not a fan of them at all, by the way I had sold Dixon's for 18 years at that point and was selling 8-20 a year up to that point with one warranty issue which was handled in a few min
