We are flying into Boston on monday October 1 and leaving Boston Sunday the 7th. Would like to see Boston on the 2nd, and then drive through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Looking for itinerary, spots to hit and stay, and timelines. Any suggestions? leaving my tractor at home

helburn museum, Burlington VT. Just visited and thought the steamboat was the best, try to get the guided tour of the boat, might only be twice a day. Admission ticket is good for two days.

Boston has the Freedom Trail which is walkable. The Duck
Boat tours are popular.
Vermont has Ben and Jerrys ice cream factory tour in
Waterbury. Trapp Family Lodge is nearby in Stowe. Cabot
Creamery tour in Cabot VT.
Fryeburg Fair will be going on that week in Maine. Great old
New England fair with Horse and Ox pulls

Mount Washington. Highest peak in the northeast.
Highest recorded windspeed in the continental US.
Leaf peeping.

I agree. Wouldn't you love to be there in the middle of winter? Throw a bucket of steaming hot water into the wind. It goes CRACK and instantly turns into ice crystals. The highest wind they do not know because it ripped the areometer rigt off the building. From what I have read the wind path comes from the great lakes and skids across till it hits Mt. Washington were it goes screaming up the mountain. Better hurry because they start shut down the end of the month for tourists.

The Cog Railway up Mt. Washington If you go early AM you can ride behind a Steam locomotive after the first one they are diesel. Don't go unless the weather is clear.

Check the web site for the Cog Railway as to what times of day they are running , but best to get there on a day/time the
steam train is running.. and check the weather??? don't be surprised if its hot and sunny at the bottom, and different at the
top. but that's what makes it a trip.

From Paul Reveres home you can follow footsteps on the sidewalk to the North Church . The cog railway is a piece of junk that gets people killed.

Really! I hadn't heard that about the Cog but I have never been on it I did drive up once.

Took ithe Cog up and down the mountain no problem. Felt perfectly safe.

Dr. Sportster, I have read many posts of yours with interest and have come to respect your knowledge. This post of yours is, however, obviously coming from total ignorance of the subject. The accident that you refer to took place 51 years ago. The train is totally new, the track is totally new, and everything about it when riding it gives you complete confidence. Ownership is different but has been in place for many years. Owner Wayne Presby is an extremely successful business man and an every day regular guy and Allis Chalmers collector. The NH PUC, being AHJ made a complete investigation and found that it was caused by operator error. It was not just one error but a series of errors that compounded and ultimately made what would have been a minor derailment a deadly accident. I think that you owe the readers here as well as Wayne Presby and Chuck Kenison the courtesy of reading a little about the railway as it is now and the accident, and see if perhaps you should change your view of it. To Chuck T, another YTer contacted me and offered to go with me to meet with you when you come to NH, to further describe NH's Cog railway to you.

Fryeburg Fair in Fryeburg, Maine is running
that week. One of the biggest fairs in NE,
you can't see it all in a day.

Rindge NH Cathedral of the Pines. There is a service several times per day of many and non denominational. It was originally started as a tribute to their son that died during WWII. The whole farm was used for this. Lake Winneposocki Not the correct spelling. The old man fell off so can't see him anymore. The Flume is a water fall deal you can walk down beside it. As already said MT. Washington. Some days visibility is good and some real poor (cloud cover).
Boston there is Old North church. The Constitution (ship), Quincy Market, Breeds Hill Bunker Hill. Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Lexington and Concord ( the shot heard round the world).
Vermont has Holstein Freesien Association, Brattleboro, Benington Battle field Benington VT, The ride across 7and 9 along the south end of both states.
Massachusetts Mohawk Trail, Hairpin turn on hwy2 Near North Adams MA.
There are other battle fields for the Revolutionary War in those states. I listed the most common ones to see along with a few more popular full family resort type places. All are family oriented places. Just some probably more interesting than others for some members of the family.

the Berkshires in Ma, Stockbridge.Norman Rockwell Museum, MASS MCA in Williamstown, Mt Greylock
Tuckermans Ravine in New Hampshire. Magic Hat Brewery in Vermont, Shelburne Museum
