Learned about chrome this week

I spent the week working at a client on their process that creates the chromium additive for animal feeds. It is quite an interesting process, and I got to work on optimizing it. In the process I learned about how animals use chromium, and how it is used in animal and human supplements. Chromium helps the body process sugar, so it is used to help diabetics.

Here is a technical description:

Chromium is important in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. It stimulates fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis, which are important for brain function and other body processes. Chromium also aids in insulin action and glucose metabolism

Yes, please clarify, because for 19 years I was a welder/machinist and OSHA always warned us of the dangers of chromium! I worked with alot of stainless steel, inconel, monell, and others. Osha made us wear special pump/filter units to test for chromium and aluminum oxide levels.

Sorry, I couldn't resist, the image of Chrome Plated intestines flashed through my mind. - P.S. , I used to work in a Plating Plant, and I know that the Chromium you're talking about is an entirely different material.

This post is a little stale, but I will add that hexavalent chrome is the concern when welding and
grinding materials containing chrome. Part of the inspection work I do at the refinery is ongoing
inspection during weld overlay work inside of vessels. The overlay material generally has a high
chrome content. We go over a lot of safety information prior to these jobs, welders who are
working continuously in this environment are required to be in enclosed helmets with breathing air
supplied from outside the vessel. Personnel such as myself who are in the area periodically can
do so with a proper respirator. However, while arc gouging chrome material is in process inside a
vessel generally only the welders with the sealed helmets are allowed inside. I?ll attach an OSHA
link on hex-chrome.
