Hey Dean UP 3985

When you see a living breathing beast like that and just smell that
smoke. Have you looked on U-Tube when they post a monthly update about
the progress on big boy. They took that thing down to every single nut
and bolt. Strasburg railroad did all of the wheel and tire work. They
are actually putting her back together. This is the latest video.

Great video. Thanks for posting.

3985 is the only UP locomotive that I have yet seen. She came through here on the CSX pulling the Santa Clause Special in, I believe, 1992. Somehow, I did not know of it. I only became aware of it after hearing a steam whistle for several minutes while working on my JD 730DWES in the barn. I was able to grab my camera and make it to the tracks about 1/4 mile from my house before she arrived. Serendipity.

She was accelerating out of town getting ready to hit the 12+ mile hill out of the Ohio River valley in about 3 or 4 miles. I was surprised by how quite and smooth she was.

I plan to visit the UP steam shops in Cheyenne next summer.

Thanks for posting, Jeff.

Do you know when 4014 is scheduled to be finished? As mentioned, I plan to visit the UP steam shops in 2019.

You may be interested to know that the N & W Y6Bs were compounds (though they could be operated in simple mode for starting purposes). The front, low pressure cylinders were about 4' in diameter. The cylinders were mounted entirely in front of the smoke box to allow tunnel clearance.

The Clinchfield borrowed that engine for the Santa Special. Was super close to their original locomotives. Only one year though. Along the route that was the home range of their stuff the curve radious of a sideing had been slightly changed. They tried to rip off one of the running boards when it hooked into a coal hopper car.

In about 2003 Nebraska Educational Television made this 46 minute documentary about the restored Challenger UP#3985 and the people who run and maintain it.

(quoted from post at 08:07:03 10/13/18) What does that monster burn for fuel, coal or oil , sure can roll the smoke.

Was originally Coal then converted to oil.
