So how bad did I get took?

So Drove that M Farmall home. Started up +15° this morning. Drove it home five miles. Ran fine but weak on power. Owners son said the carb had been "fixed" by a shade tree not long ago. Figured the loader is worth more then the tractor. Decided to roll the dice. Tractor has power steering and live hydraulics added.

Yea. I guess we just have to guess, about half of us say he stole it, the other half say Coulda found a lot better tractor for 1/2 the money, and we end up about right?

When you say weak on power, do you mean while
driving home, while in 5th gear? Did you have to
climb any hills? Those old birds have a really high
road gear, and with that loader stuck out front,
climbing any hill would draw down hard on your
engine rpm. I would test the tractor out with some
low gear jobs now that you have it home, before I?d
go tinkering with things too much. I had a M , early
model, around 36 hp. Go like a scared cat down the
road empty, but a gutless wonder with any kind of
load in high gear.

I strongly suggest adding at least 2 sets of rear wheel weights. 4 sets are even better. Without rear wheel weights, a full load in that bucket will result in the rear tires having very little traction. The tractor will also be much more stable and less prone to upsetting.

It's an M, if you didn't get at least 200 bucks to haul it off you got took.....could be worse.....couple have been an AC.

Actually here, with the loader, very good rubber and nice paint that's about a 1 K tractor. Can't hardly give em away. Folks who want that kinda power own 10-20 acres and can afford a new utility. For the rest it's about 100 HP short of being a usable tractor.

Rick

Looks to me like you have a fairly decent light duty loader tractor with the power steering and live hydraulics. I grew up running a Deere A with a Caswell loader and no power steering or live hydraulics. Your M is a Cadillac in comparison.

Sodbuster ....... ever go back after you make a post and check out some of the replies? C'mon, help us out
with this one. You're the guy who asked the question and as far as I can figure, not one guy here on the
forum can answer it. Maybe you're having a long nap today?

Fighting with the cold and its not even cold yet is what I've been doing.

As for the tractor after talking to a couple local mechanics I called the tractor owner and long story short he got his tractor back and I got my check back ( Uncashed).

What is clear is this: you have a good dog who loves you, wants to be out in the cold with you and doesn't care what you paid for the tractor or if you keep it.

Looks like a good tractor. What it’s worth? The power steering worth $600-$700, Schwartz wide front $500, rear tires look good, $600, loader $900. I sold one way worse last spring for $1800, I’m not to far west of you. Use it and enjoy it, it’s not always about the money!

Wife lets me do what I want with my money. Gives her an excuse to one up me. Kind of like how I bought a .357 and now she is looking at .44 spl. If that M would have worked out I would have came home to a 400, or knowing her a W9 in MY parking spot.

(quoted from post at 20:19:38 11/08/18) Had a mechanic look at it- at my expense- and it needed rings and sleeves. Basicly a overhaul.
Must be a good mechanic if could tell it needed rings by looking at it.

I'm not sure if I know anyone who considers a .44 spl to be a one up on a .357 mag, do you mean .44 mag? Anyway, glad you got out of a bad deal on the M, if the inspection (after purchase) wasn't part of the deal, consider yourself lucky the guy took it back.

Magician in fact. Do a leakdown test when warm. Sleeves don't really wear on tractors. If the leaddown shows a problem, pop the head off, pull the pan and do rings and maybe do the valve and seat with some paste. Gasket set, and off ya go.

He brought his crystal gazing ball. You know the one with the hose and the gauge looking thingy that screws into the spark plug hole(s)

In her mind a .44 is bigger. Let her think that so she doesn't get ideas. Next thing she'll want a .454, .480 or bigger.
