Some old country music

Further to the ice skating photo I posted. One of the guys in the photo made a tape recording way back in the early days of reel to reel tape. It was winter time of 1955 or 56. I'm lucky to have a copy of the recording since two of my uncles are on it as well as my grandfather. I think the whole recording is over an hour long and was done at two or three different homes. Both my uncles sang and played guitar, banjo, harmonica and maybe a few other things I've forgotten. I used my Uncle Don's version of Mountain Dew as background for this video of old family photos.

That was great Rusty. I grew up in a community that would have home grown talent at dances , wedding shower parties, etc, that would sound much like that.. my oldest brother played rhythm guitar, another farmer neighbor played violin, while a neighbor lady played the piano. My Dad called off square dance calls. And the last time on your video, was a favourite round dance tune to square dance to.
My brother is the only one of this musical trio left, and he has taken up the fiddle. He and I get together once and a while, and I?ll play rhythm guitar while he runs through some of those old dance tunes.

Awesome !! Thanks for sharing this Rusty6. I love what I call real music like this. I cant stand to listen to most of the canned stuff on the radio but I cant get enough of the real thing.

St. Anne's Reel. Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for sharing. Reminded me of my youth when we would have small community get together's. Country ham & fried chicken with all the fixings and a band of farmer musicians. Old folks out on the floor square dancing and having a ball. A couple of the musicians had played with Lester Flat & Earl Scruggs before they moved to Nashville. Good times!

Rusty6 you should build a bed and breakfast and I will be your first customer love the videos you share with us THANKS.

I'm about 1/4 the way through reading the novel Lonesome Dove. Somehow your photo made me think of some of the characters in the book. Great photo, can't get enough of that stuff.

Thanks for the kind comments on the video and pictures. That is my grandpa on the left, first world war army veteran. My uncle Don in centre with the cowboy hat. He always wore one. Uncle Roy on the left. They show up in the video several times.I think of tht music and video sometiems when I'm in or near the old house. It is hard to believe they got so many people into that tiny kitchen with a tape recorder around the wood stove and made all that music. The uncles sometimes played at country school dances. And in later years it became a yearly tradition they would bring their guitar , banjo, and sing the old songs on New Year's day. I have a few recordings of that but this audio from 1955 was made when I was only 2 years old.
I might have already posted this harvest video of my uncle Don on the 95 John Deere. The background music is him playing harmonica and Uncle Roy on the guitar from that same 1955 recording. You will all know the tune I think.

My b.i.law wrote the song"Blackboard Of My Heart", sold it to a fella for $50.00 back in the early "50s Was probably rewritten by someone else after that. Hank Thompson recorded it in the Middle 50s.

Thanks DavidJ. Now you mention St. Anne's reel it reminds me I used that same tune for this cold Christmas day video in 2014. It was well
below zero but sunshine and blue sky so we spent some time playing in the snow. Kind of sad to see poor old Rosco at the 50 second
point. They had to put him to sleep here just a month ago but he had lived a good long life.
I have to apologize for the poor sound quality on this one but I think it is still recognizable.

Rusty, I enjoyed the good old pickin family music, gee it was so real in a time everything is so fake and uncaring. what a good way after working hard to left of some steam.( I can almost smell all that good food that they would have afterwards) You have to miss those days. I do. I was young for some of it, but look around and saw family enjoying each other.
Thanks Rusty, enjoy your posts.
