Impressive machine

The electric company has been out clearing right of ways. They cleared where the power line crossed a wooded holler on the farm. It's amazing. Woods there one day, and gone the next. Too bad it's too steep for me to keep mower.

Hopefully they will apply a herbicide next year. Those machines are going the way of the dodo in the south. Herbicides are cheaper, safer, and longer lasting. It does take utility managers with some foresight to establish a herbicide program. The resulting weeds and flora are great habitat for all sorts of wildlife, plus pollinators and butterflies.

We had a guy that had an excavator with a flail type shredder on it. He did some easement work on my place. I think the machine was called a "Bronto". I wish I could have kept the ground cleared like it was after he was done, but a lot of it was too wet to get on with a tractor except in mid summer and I was always too busy. They do an amazing job as long as they don't find an old roll of fencing!

The railroad had an excavator with a bush hog type mower doing the banks of the tracks and a blade came off traveled several 100 yard and crashed thru the glass at the highschool pool.

About every 5 yrs the power company comes thru with 2 large excavators with flail mowers to clear the power lines near me. It is fun to watch the chips fly everywhere. Speaking of power lines we had a heavy snow storm yesterday causing a lot of tree damage and the Helicopter just flew over as they always do the day after a storm checking the lines.

Yeah - the power company near me uses them - I think they call them forestry cutters. I looked in to renting a skid steer sized one - it was $1200/day, but I'm guessing you could reclaim a lot of pasture in a day

Townsend came through my place last year to clear a Duke Energy ROW.

They had 2c 90 HP Kubota rubber tracked skid steer machines with Fecon grinders and a much larger 350 HP steel tracked Fecon grinders that walked right through 12"+ hedge trees.

Duke also paid a separate subcontractor to apply herbicide but I know that it was not done.

Used to have turtles sunning themselves on a fallen log in a wetland pond on the property until the phragmite was sprayed a few times. Now there are no more turtles there anymore. Hasn't been for over two years now....

I saw something like that in MS years ago on a grown over cutover doing that stuff. It looked like a combine and came in on 3 flatbed trucks and they had to put it together there. two sets of tracks on 2 trucks and a head and body on the third truck. It was gigantic!
When they left it was all ground flat to the ground, stumps, brush, vines, all of it reduced to chips. I never seen anything like it before or since. I wish I had a picture of that thing.

If you look up "forestry mulcher" on YouTube you can see many different ones in action. Pretty impressive.
