Going to buy a tractor today

I’m going to buy a tractor this morning. I won’t be able to bring it home today, hopefully within a couple weeks, but I’m going to buy it today. I’m buying it from a “dealer” of sorts, even though it’s a 1940s tractor.

I’m pretty certain I’m going to buy a Farmall H for $1000, unless something else really catches my eye for a similar price.

I find my mon's 1950 Farmall C is a very handy
tractor pulling a 10k dump trailer and very smooth 6
ft zero turn mower.

I had to modify the hitch to pull the trailer.

Love mowing with this girl. Only mower that is easy
on my old back.

Is $1000 asking price? Is it negotiable? If your going to pay asking price I would ask them to deliver it. You will find lots of people ask what they want and others mark the price up a bit. Especially dealers! Good luck.

Well, the “old tractor dealer” I’m buying from showed me two different Farmall H tractors. One of them looks nicer but won’t shift into 2nd or 3rd gear. The other one is rustier but shifts fine. He said he’s going to work on the tractor this week and by Friday he’ll let me know if he got it working.

I put $500 down and he said that gives me my choice of the two Farmall H tractors when I pay the other $500.

I find 99 out of 100 it doesn?t matter how cheap something is
,someone will demand it cheaper, always always add a
reasonable little cushion .

Look at all the probable expenses with each tractor before you make a choice. A good paint job can be expensive versus fixing or replacing a shift rail in the
transmission. Engines in nearly the same condition? Is one transmission considerably louder than the other? Leaks? Oil pressure? Temp gauge? Ammeter? Lights?
Probably no way to hook up hydraulics if so equipped but pull the Lift All rod back to see if the hydraulics groan (good), hose stiffens, or engine pull down slightly?

The dealership would be a good place to have fluid ballast added. You could have included it when you negotiated the price. To save the cost of a service call, you may want to add the ballast before you bring it home.

A strong mix of Calcium chloride might cost around $200 (5 pounds per gallon) to add 1000 pounds of ballast. Cast iron weights can cost $0.75 to $1 per pound.

FYI $1000.00 is top price for an H around here. Not trying to run down your tractor. 10 years ago they
would have brought $2500. Hope you have fun with her. Back in the 50's a lot of guys farmed 160 acres
with them.

$1,000 could be a great price if tires are very good, or a high price if they are badly cracked.
