Grandpa, around here digging ponds is what long sticks are used for. As with any machine around mud you have to be very careful.

My dad ran an excavator for a while, he was digging peat out, the excavator started settling, he quit and moved on.

Have seen worse. Have been personally stuck worse myself. Only because of a
boss shooting orders he shouldn't have ! Who was I to argue with the guy
signing my check and owned the machine. Looks bad, it's really not that
scary or dangerous as you think. Happ3ns pretty slow usually.

That's what my uncle does. All days 6 days a week. Bails gravel out from under water. 65 foot reach.
