Farmall 240 clutch issue

I went to take the 240 out today, it started like normal. When I went to put it in gear it made a grinding noise like the clutch wasn?t engaged. If I shut it off and put it in a gear then started the tractor all was well, but I couldn?t shift gears without the grinding. Any foresight would be appreciated.

Finger broke or went thru the pressure plate. Most likely the throw out bearing just went thru the fingers. Going to have to split the tractor for sure.

had same issue on a 530 case, that turned out to be pilot bearing. when you have it apart be sure to check or replace yours.

Or maybe the disk is froze to the flywheel? Does clutch pedal still feel/operate normal? If it's a stuck disc it should come loose with some driving around the yard.

I also think clutch

plat is stuck try putting in high gear go to wide open throttle and drop clutch hold brakes. I have done this on 4020 jd

disc is not stuck to the flywheel as you started the engine check your linkage. with engine running and the tractor is moving in gear then you push the clutch in does the tractor stop moving if the clutch plate was stuck to the flywheel the tractor would still keep moving

Baker Welcome to YT! How much free travel does the clutch pedal have? Using your hand push the pedal down easily until you feel the resistance of it trying to release the pressure plate, you should have about a three quarter to an inch between the pedal and the platform rest. If you have more then this that will add to non release difficulties. Adjust by pulling linkage pin and turning yoke clevis. Just FYI, I believe normal convention is to refer to clutch operation as disengaging or releasing when you push the pedal.
