Not just YT

These odd characters that show up in Classic when somebody posts from a smart phone seemed to be limited to YT,but this was in the heading of an email that I received. "The Smokies?Ÿ˜???" Unless that really does mean something that I just don't get,the glitch is spreading.

It's a I-phone glitch from what I found.
They show up at a Dodge power wagon site I frequent.

It is annoying to try to read some of the posts here with all those characters in the message. Sometimes its bad enough I don't bother.

Same here. I thought somebody was talking about a Farmall C one time when he was talking about an H. Those symbols put the C more prominent than the H.

Think you'll find it has to do with encoding of the message.

In Firefox you click on the 3 bars top RHS, then "More" and you get "Text encoding"

It will probably have "Western" selected. Try "Unicode" and see what happens.

Seems at times this doesn't help but swapping back to "Western" will straighten things out - don't ask me why!

(Below "Western" there are a lot of foreign language options which don't apply).

The option will be in other browsers - somewhere

I replied to a topic a couple days ago using my Ipad and the preview looked normal but when I submitted it the goofy characters showed up and it was where I used " showed up instead of the word inches.

Ian, You are on the money as to where the problem is. It is UNICODE characters generated from the ultra-modern devices, the iPhone being one of them when it uses Chrome for a browser, but eventually, all of them will. The reason that changing the browser side doesn't always work, is because these UNICODE characters actually occupy more space than good old ASCII characters, and they get messed up when the post is stored to disk. Then they don't show up correctly even if the browser is set up to accept them. Especially with Classic View, the storage method is antique.

I am trying to fix this right now. I have to intercept the characters and turn them back into the older versions of characters like quotes and apostrophes. That will eliminate the problem. Most of the time those are the characters that have to be replaced.

I've not been successful so far but I got side tracked. I'll try to get back on it tomorrow as I realize it's very irritating.
