I recently bought this old hood ornament. It was sold as a Mack ornament. I'm betting it's probably just a generic bulldog and someone thought it was a Mack. Anyway I liked it so I went ahead and bought it. There is no markings on it that I see. Anyone have any ideas?

That's what I thought to. I did read they went through a few changes over the years. I was wondering if this happened to be older than the sitting dog.

I believe the front feet were up in the air on the old B model Macks. But the dog was more squared off than yours. They changed the dogs over the years as well as their function on the truck. Some trivia:

A gold bulldog indicates and all-Mack drivetrain ( Engine, transmission, drive axles )

The link has an interesting write- up on the history of the bulldog .
History of Mack bulldog

The gold dogs were on the Elithe Models and the silver were on the plain jane models. The Macks that I drove were special built for the Boss. They always had the the Gold Dogs.

The orginal bulldog patent.

This is when it sat on top the radiator cap.
When the moved him to the hood they gave him a pedestal to stand on and used all 4 legs.
In the late 70's they shortened his ears and tail.

The gold bulldog signifies a all Mack drivetrain.
The chrome bulldog means something in the driveline is not built by Mack.

B-61 Mack diesel, dually, chrome wheels, dual exhaust. She has the silver bulldog standing on his hind legs. How would this one be for a Sunday cruise down the highway?

The gold were on trucks with complete Mack drivetrain.
The silver ones were on trucks that might have a
Cummins engine or Spicer transmission, etc.

The gold bull dogs started with the "Maxi-dyne" engines and "Max-itorque" transmissions. Rearends optional, not always Mack. Since then it at times has meant an all Mack drive train and/or optional higher trim levels.

hey shortened the ears and tail after lawsuits from drivers catching their rings on the bigger ears and tail.

(quoted from post at 17:23:22 03/21/19) Who knows the difference between a gold mack bulldog and a silver one?

The gold bulldog indicates it is Mack through and through. No Cummins or Cat engines.
