New John Deeres

My dad, brother, and a friend were with me when I took this photo at the John Deere dealers in Melville, Sask. on March 3 , 1973. That new 4430 was bought by a local guy whose son still uses it. Not sure about the little Mannheim tractors but they sold well around here too. An earlier version of my 2140.

I used to drive buy the Mannheim tractor plant every day. I seen hundreds of those things loaded on
trains headed for the ports. Every day there was a cab over straight truck sitting outside that plant
unloading cases of beer. At 10:00 and 2:00 everything came to a halt while the folks sat down and drank
a bottle of beer. This must be almost mandatory at German factorys. Guys this beer sits outside in all
weather. In the summer they drink it hot, in the winter, well it never got real cold there. Guys I've
drank some premium German beer. And then theres the stuff these trucks unloaded.

(quoted from post at 22:47:00 03/21/19) What is on the side of the smaller tractors ?

IIRC headlamps, rear lamp/lamp brackets & warning lights for highway travel were in similar boxes on new JD tractors shipped from Mannheim to Houston.

That was a big deal when the Sound Idea tractors were introduced. Does anyone remember the goofy ball caps they gave away? They had an elongated bill that was about twice as big as a regular ball cap. A lot of old timers cut the bill down to normal size and wore those caps for years.

Great photo .... home of the Melville Millionaires, over 100 years for that team .... hard to believe. Not sure if they are in the playoffs
this year or not, or maybe didn't survive the first round?

(quoted from post at 05:35:46 03/22/19) No room for axle mount duals on that 4430 is there.
"Jobber" duals were pretty common here at the time. I'm fairly sure it had duals on it when the owner got it. I have another picture from the same day taken in front of the CCIL dealership. The building is visible way in the background of the John Deere pic.

Nice photo. Lots of stuff in the backgound to take note of as well. Those 30 series with SGB hit the market at a good
time. People had cash, real cash to work with and Deere couldn't build them fast enough.

There were two axle lengths available for the 4430. Also, the center castings could anchor to different nubs on the rims, to make different spacings.
