JD 14T baler oil seal

Baler newbie just purchased JD 14T baler. Only problem I have found so far is a leaking oil seal. The seal is located where the plunger crankshaft penetrates the main gear drive case (opposite side of flywheel.) Has anyone replaced this seal and is it as big a job as I am contemplating??? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated....

It is not a fun job.

The crankshaft or "spindle" has to be pressed out of the large driven gear, and then pressed back on.

Is yours an early serial number (before 32568) with a 3-piece crankshaft, or a later model with a one-piece crankshaft?

Serial # 48598 so I guess it is newer style one piece. I think you are saying the case has to be split and crankshaft pressed out. Am I dreaming to think that with the plunger shaft removed and crankshaft housing (#5 on parts diagram) removed on pickup head side...that the crank could be pried out of case without splitting or is it going to be easier to just split the case.

I recall removing that gear on a 24T, and some years later, a 14T, and there was no "prying" that gear off.

For the beating they take driving that crank, they are a pretty tight press fit, unfortunately.

I am sure you are correct...it will need to be pressed off. Just so i have this straight in my mind...Remove plunger shaft and crank housing on pickup head side...split the case and I should end up with the crank penetrating 1/2 of the case and the large drive gear still on the inside of the case correct??? Press crank out, replace seal and reassemble.
It is never something simple is it....better get going!!!

I'm not sure if it would be possible to support the case and press the crankshaft out without disassembling it, the two I was involved with we tore down, as you are suggesting.

Post back when you get it done, it will be interesting to hear how much of a job it was to get that gear to move1

Hey Bob ...you were correct and I ended up tearing the hole thing down. Ready to pull trans and crankshaft unit out but ran into a problem. That crankshaft housing (#5) parts diagram. . I can't figure out how to remove it. I removed the gear and 4 bolts. Do you remember how it is removed from shaft. Do I use a puller... I don't see any type of retaing clips. .I am just not sure and don't want to damage anything...
