Jump starters

Anyone use one of these? Think they would start a old gas tractor without a battery. I like to start mine every now and then but hate playing musical batteries.

Not without a battery it won?t they don?t have the
reserve for that . I?ve seen one start a the 4 cylinder
Diesel engine in a swather with a weak battery

There is a family that brings 5-6 tractors to the pulls that use one of those rather than having a battery in each one.

Use one quite often :)

I have a micro start XP-10 its 3 years old I spec I have used it close to 200 times give are take the only thing its not worked well on is a diesel with a completely dead battery... Its a toy but a nice toy Smile... The cables are small and short I wore/burnt the clamps out I had a old jump box took the cables off of it and put them on the micro... The clamps are the weak link... They are amazing and I am a hard sale...

Ollie ...... Doesn't an old tractor with a battery ignition system have to have a battery in it (even if it is dead) if it is
running? Something about damaging the electrical components if not hooked up or maybe not even running?

Crazy Horse, it would depend on what type electronics it has.

If it has an alternator or electronic ignition conversion, then it could damage something IF the jump box were disconnected with it running.

If it has a generator and points or magneto, it would not hurt it.

But either way, as long as the jump box was left connected it would not know the difference in a jump box or a battery.

Now if it were a 6 volt with battery ignition, it would eventually overheat the coil and arc the points, but it could still be run intermittently just to keep the rust out of the cylinders.

Thank you for all the replies. I may try one. Would be handy to have in the car anyway. A guy at work had a small one. He was always leaving his light on.
I couldn't believe that little thing would jump it. I guess I still dont eventhough I saw it work. Also heard other good things on other forums. Thanks again.

Just don't do like my late FIL did. He bought a jump pack, never read the instructions at all and stuck it behind the seat in his truck. A few months later he went to use it and of course it was deader than Napoleon. They have to be charging whenever they aren't in use.[/url]

Just check local carpart stores. If they do a lot of battery replacements they
have old ones in back. Many of them do recharges and then load meter them and
battery analyzer them. Usually have 90 day return. $40.oo for a good used
battery. Also check your local car junk yard. I have gotton a whole bunch of
batteries that way. Here are a bunch. A full blown Optima AGM, a regular wet
cell with the sticker from Interstate used, A lawn tractor battery, Three damp
cell batteries from those electric scooters, they work great on my troy horse
tiller and other small stuff, and an optima 6 volt. Im a battery scrounge.

Like you I have a couple tractors I use 30 min. a year at the most I use that jump box I posted on the dead dead dead battery's until last year they both have electronic ignition.

I made a battery box on one that mounts to the side of the tractor so I could put any battery in it then put maintainers on them...

Those little jump boxes do work and work great even without a battery  I am not promoting use it without a battery tho I have... Most of the time with no battery its on a small engine with electric start that has no battery..

Those JNC are good also but they don't have the punch that micro start does are longevity either...

Thanks Hobo. Some of my tractors only get started once or twice a year then get driven around the yard. I get tired of packing batteries around and lifting them up over the hood. Was thinking of buying a new battery or two but I can buy one of these for near the same price. Just a thought I had last night and picked one off the internet real quick for an example. Time for some more research. I was pretty impressed with the video you shared.

Cool... ScannerDanner is not yer average run of the mill youtuber...
He ranks top of the field when it comes to automotive diagnosis...
